Import to India?

OK, i've got my bike all the way from the UK into India and i'm looking forward to a couple of months travelling around. My problem is what next?

I have a job that starts in Malawi mid January. I have bought myself a flight but all the quotes to ship my bike have been very expensive (minimum 500 GBP). Bearing in mind my bike is only worth around 800 it doesn't seem worth it.

Can I legally sell my bike in India? What would happen to my carnet? I don't want to ruin chances of getting one in the future.

All i can think of is giving it away, claim it was stolen and claim on the insurance to reclaim some money for the bike and clear the carnet. But that is very naughty.

To sum up...

1) Anyone know any cheap shipping companies Mumbai - Lilongwe, Malawi (Africa)
2) Can I legally sell the bike in India?
3) How do I clear the carnet so I can get one in the future?

Hi Mate,

I see that you have imported a bike to India. Could you kindly advice me what bike is it that u imported and how much did u pay for the same in terms of import duties.

I too plan to import mine from UK for India. It would be great help to know some insider tips for the process.
