Import bike from Canada to USA (California)

Hello,

** Note: I am new to this forum so if this is the wrong place I apologize and will remove/re-post in the correct spot. **

I am looking to import my 2018 BMW R1200 GSA from Canada to the USA. I moved to California for work and want to bring my bike with me. If it matters I am a US Citizen.

Based on research here is what I believe to know:
Customs looks for:
  • Bike must comply with US emissions including California. **It DOES**
  • Bike must comply with US DOT standard. **It does NOT**
  • Pay duties if required.

California DMV looks for:
  • Cleared customs
  • Bike must have more than 7,500 miles on the odo.

Since the bike does not comply with the DOT standard, I believe I need to import the bike in through a Registered Importer.

I am wondering the following:
  • Is what I stated correct? Anything i'm missing?
  • Has anyone done this before that can speak to the process first hand? I can't be the first person to do this.
  • If i do need to go through a registered importer, does anyone have any recommendations?

Thanks for taking the time to read.

I don't think it can be that hard, the reason; I purchased a used Kawasaki from a US citizen, who had imported it from Ontario to Minnesota. It has a Km speedo. My recommendation is to call the US border station near where you're going to import it. California may have special requirements. I suspect your Dept of Motor Vehicles can give you information pertaining to Cal. requirements.
