How to sell a car in South Africa?

Hi,

we are planning a trip from Europe to South Africa and instead of shipping our car back home were thinking it would be an easier and cheaper option for us to sell the car and fly home.

However, it seems this is more difficult than we thought paperwise, also considering that the car is a left-side driven one. Does anyone have any experience in this field? Perhaps there are countries close by where it might be easier?

Thanks for your help!
Sofie

We're looking to do the same thing, but haven't been able to sort it out yet. I'll keep you up to date when we find out how to do it.

Maybe someone else will know.

Thanks - we'll be sure to do the same for you! Will try to set up a thread in the sub-sahara forum, maybe there are some people there with experience with this sort of thing.

The simple answer is this:

It will take you at least 3 months worth of paperwork and 35% import duty to register the car in South Africa before you can sell it. That's provided that you can import and register a LHD vehicle, which I'm not sure of.

To ship a TLC back tot he UK on RORO will cost around GBP1 000. Then you get your Carnet money back and you can sell it to the next overlander, advertising it as "Experienced"
