hi Im new and enjoy the site lots. have question about importing bike to chile

I am considering driving my klr to S.A, My wife is a chilean citizen. Is it possible for me to leave the bike there legally. Thanks alot for consideration.

That's a little tricky - as a general rule, you must IMPORT the bike into the country and pay the duty and taxes.

SOME countries you can ILLEGALLY just leave the bike there and get away with it. I doubt you can in Chile for any length of time.

Also depends on whether you're thinking of PERMANENTLY leaving the bike - if permanent, you'll have to get Chilean registration etc, so yes, you'll have to import it and pay all duties.

thanks for the reply. I must be sure this is done leagally as I spend 1 month each year down there and may retire there some day.
the reason I chose the klr 650 is its cheap and may be lost/stolen on the trip. If the cost of importing is cheaper than shipping back to U.S its worthwhile Thanks again.
