Help - Temporary Import of Vehicle to Turkey

Currently racking my brain to get around the following problem:

I am hoping to spend over 6 months there and basically the law states that you can only have a foreign vehicle there for 6 months and then not re-enter with it until another 6 months has passed.

You can apply have to have the vehicle brought in on a temporary import card but you have meet a strict criteria and the deposit required on the vehicle is very, very expensive.

Could a Carnet de Passage get around this problem, I know you don’t need one for Turkey but it could act as a guarantee/deposit for the vehicle. This would be so much cheaper.

Any comments, ideas?

Thanks

I spent a couple of months in Turkey with my bike last year. As i recall, they told me i could import the bike temporarily for 2 months without documentation. I had a carnet, so i got them to stamp it, but i think there may have been a limit on that time as well (6 months?). A carnet is usually valid for only a year anyway. However, with a carnet you may be able to bring the bike in and out a few times.

Julio:

I have never been to Turkey, and have no knowledge of either the law there or how it is applied.

However... based on my experience in a whole lot of other countries that are 'more annoying' than Turkey, I think that you will probably find that the law was written to keep Turkish residents from clandestinly importing foreign vehicles, not to prevent bona fide tourists from coming into the country.

In other words, if you show up with a UK registered vehicle and a UK passport, and it is rather obvious from your kit that you are visiting (making touristic travel) rather than moving to the country, I doubt very much if anyone will give you a hard time.

Again, this is just speculation on my part, but it is fairly well informed speculation.

- Rules in Turkey -

Has anyone been in Turkey recently since the end of April 2007.

The laws apparently have changed at the end of April.
