Getting a Carnet in SE Asia

Hi All,

I have a vague trip planned which involved buying a bike in SE Asia (probably thailand or malaysia) and riding... erm... west. As far as I can get in the time I have (which will hopefully include India and Pakistan). I'm going to need a carnet for some countries.

Does anyone have experience buying a bike in these or similar countries, and getting a carnet? How do you do it, through a local agency or through your home agency?

I'm Australia by the way.

Cheers!

Think you'll find the cost of buying a bike in these countries pretty high due to import taxes. It only cost me $400 to ship my bike from Melbourne to KL, Malaysia. I arranged my carnet via UK RAC over the phone and due to my timings etc, they couriered it out to me in Malaysia when I picked up the bike.

Thanks for the feedback. I had kind of thought about buying a local (or atleast very second hand) bike, hoping to avoid that kind of import tax issue.

Any other thoughts would be happy to hear them!
