Foreign national purchasing motorcycle in US
 

Was in a Kawasaki dealer today purchasing a KLR 650. Everything was going smoothly until the dealer said "What about your social security number!!" Of course I dont have one, I live and work in Ireland.

The dealer was real nice and made a phone call to the Department of Motor Vehicles (think this is where they called) anyway it turns out you need a form from them that basically exempts you from having a social security nr. The form says that you have never been a citizen of the US, etc. You normally need this social security nr to actually register your motorcycle and get plates in a particular state.

Thing is not every dealer will be willing to run out of their shop at 4pm just to go get you this form. They might just tell you you can't have the motorcycle. Check it out first.

These type of rules are established by the individual state government (there are 50 different ones in America). The situation Grant described may not apply in other states - but then again, other states may have even more offbeat rules!
