Who has experienc? Is it possible to travel without the carnet or is it better to buy one. If we go without how many is the uncourage price?

We are slowly heading that way from Australia. Used Carnet in Malaysia, Singapore, Cambodia, once in Thailand, once they didnt accept it. We have been told that Iran is very strong on wanting an official carnet, but like all of Asia, it is more who is doing the job on the day, and even more so how many American dollars you have to spare.
