Egypt traffic laws

I've not seen reference on the HUBB yet about new traffic laws in Egypt.
They've recently come in and those and a lot of the old ones are being enforced more rigorously. This is causing friction as it's seen as a money earner for the Police, as you would expect.
They're also clamping down on the old taxis and hope to phase them all out in the next few years.
Currently several major road junctions have young men trying to sell you warning triangles and first aid kits. But they probably aren't approved by the Traffic Authority and no doubt will be of no use when the Police stop you.
There even seems to be some form of list of what you should have in the first aid kit.

Information as to what the exact new laws are is sparse and I think it's being made up on the spot. Like the man who was fined for having his wing mirrors a different colour to the rest of his car, or one who obscured his windscreen by having his prayer beads hanging from the rearview mirror.
However a few are of the penalties are as follows -
Parking in no parking area 30le
Driving without seatbelt 50le
Using mobile phone when driving 50le
Eating drinking or smoking when driving 50le
Putting children in front seats 50le
Sitting on stop line at traffic 50le
Driving a car with foreign registration plate 150le
Driving a car with non Egyptian driving licence 150le
Not stopping at checkpoint 250le
Driving through a red light 250le
Driving against the traffic 250le
Driving whilst drunk 500le
Driving without your licence in car 500le
Exceeding the speed limit by 1-10 kmph 50le
10-20 100le
20-30 150le
more than 40kmph exceeding the limit 250le

I would expect that the thing about not having an Egyptian driving licence wont apply to overlanders and most are obviously not applicable to two wheelers.

Also clamping down on helmets

As I found out today, they're also clamping down on bikers not wearing helmets.

Cann't complain, it'll stop me popping to the shops without one, like a fool.

LOL Tom,
only theoretically there are, and as you realise, in practice it's debatable.
It's a twilight zone.
In fact there could be a new slogan for Egyptian tourism - Egypt, the twilight zone, where things may not be what they seem.

Jamie - doesn't your LC just have a British plate on it? I can't remember seeing a local one, unless I missed it because you were weaving so fast in and out of the traffic whilst drinking, eating, talking on your mobile without your seat belt on?
That'd cost you now.
