driving to OZ from UK - what to do with the car when we get there?

Hi guys.

my wife and i are thinking about driving to OZ in either a camper van or 4x4 from the UK. we aim to settle in oz eventually and would like to keep the vehicle, but appreciate that import costs are high.

however, if we aim to drive there and 'throw away' the vehicle as import costs are so high how do we do that? is it feasible? is it better to pay the import costs and run the vehicle? can the vehicle be scrapped there?

if it helps, the vehicle cost will be 5k-8k. i've had a look at the OZ import stuff. it appears that we will have to pay shipping + about 15%. shipping will only be from either NZ or malaysia/Philippines, not form the UK.

thanks for your help

what you propose is not possible. Well not officially anyway.

You will need a Carnet de Passage to get the vehicle into Aus in the 1st place. If you are a UK national I dont think you can import the vehicle without the correct visa's in place. It sounds like you will be going in on a tourist visa, this isn't good enough.

Where will your last country be before entering Aus? You may be able to do something with it there but again this is unlikely.

We are doing the same next year. We are going in on holiday/working visa (12 month) with a Carnet for our Land Rover. From there I plan to get a work sponsored visa as I am on their skills list which will give me a temporary residency visa. Hopefully I can re-new my Carnet after 12 months or try to import when eventually on a perm res visa.

hope this helps.
