driving into turkey (URGENT ADVICE PLEASE)
 

Hi, i'm leaving to drive to Turkey on tuesday. i know it's short notice and i've probably left it too late but waht paperwork do i need? i've just done a quick google search and it said i need a international driving licence but i only have a uk licence. also it says i need a green card?

any quick advice would be much appreciated

If you are based in the UK you can get an International Driving Licence over the counter at the Post Office. Take your full licence (and counterpart) with you plus passport size photos (usually there is a photo machine in the Post Office). They issue them straight away. Don't know if you can buy 3rd party insurance at your point of entry into Turkey.

OP, you don't even say where you live, or if you're there now, or what.....

Bring international license, now that you've been told you need it. Wherever you are, there's a way to get it done on the spot--in the States its done at AAA offices. Bring your bike documents. Bring your green card if you've got one (how are you getting there without a green card, which you need to drive in Greece or Bulgaria, all else aside?), but if Turkey's not included buy insurance at the border---it's cheap. Bring your passport. Bring money. Bring patience and a couple of ATM cards.

That ought to cover it.

Left Turkey a couple of days ago coming into Greece, didn't get asked at border with Iran about green card but did when leaving into Greece so just showed them my UK insurance cert and that was enough but when I crossed into Turkey from Greece in September 09 a green card was demanded, which I had a the time but another (UK) guy brought a green card a the border for €5

Sorry. Bit of a hasty post yesterday.

I'm still in the Uk. Driving to dove on Tuesday night and then across France Italy and Greece into turkey.

Spoke to my insurance company today. I'm driving an old black cab and it's classi car insurance so they can't insure into turkey.

Can I get third party at the border? Hopefully I can get a gren card at the border. Do you know where to get an immediate international driving liscence in the Uk? Ping to do a google search now.

Also we hope to be travelling through Romania and Slovakia and a whole load of eastern European countries on the way back which aren ratified within te eu and so we aren't insured. Any advice on gettin insurance in those countries?

If you are going to cross the Bulgarian/Turkish border at Svilengrad/Edirne which I think is the E80, as you approach the mega vehicle park, on the right side is several kiosks, about the middle is an insurance one. They will try and sell you 3 months worth but if you are just transiting be firm with them, they don't bite and everyone at the border from the police directing traffic onwards was really friendly. I would suggest a nightstop in Svilengrad, twice now I have used the big old communist style hotel on the square, cheap and friendly. Make sure you tank up just before the border, you can tell when you are getting near, the number of gas stations multiply rapidly the reason being gas is as Mike inferred, the most expensive in Europe. Ride/drive safe.

QWe drove through Europe and entered Turkey last Tuesday. On the way thhrough Europe we got stung on the Serbian border for green card = 110 euro. The Turkish border asked for 37 Euro for the green card and were very friendly and helpful. Visas are 15 Euro or 10 GBP. There is a cash machine in the border buildings and definitely buy fuel before entering as it is very expensive in Turkey!
