Demanding a Carnet when already on the road ?

Hi folks !

I´ve been travelling 1,5 years in africa and now driving back through Egypt. Until now for the whole westcoast i didn´t need and had one but now i think Egypt wants it to get through.

How are you experiences with demanding a Carnet de Passage when on the road away from home ? I am german and would demand it at the ADAC. My parents have signatures from me and could produce a letter that "authorizes" them to do the procedure for me, of course it would look like I wrote it. Would be send by dhl to sudan then.

Any possibilities ??

greetings from Goma / DRC,

CHris

Chris,

What's your planned route? You can get by on TIPs in Zambia and Malawi but my understanding is that a carnet is required for Kenya and Sudan as well as Egypt. People say different things about Tanzania. Ethiopia doesn't require a carnet.

I'd get someone in Germany to contact ADAC (not necessarily on your behalf) and enquire now what the requirements are. TIPs only allow you to import for a limited period and there will be a lead in time to set up the carnet.

I don't think the logistics of getting the carnet whilst on the road will be an insurmountable problem. It's more likely to be timescales that are an issue, especially if you need to organise insurance/security. Or are your parents able to put up the necessary deposit for you?

we just arranged them via ADAC (we're Dutch, but our 'ADAC' doesn't supply CdP's and thus we need to go to ADAC)
We are currently in Argentina, and this was no problem.

I did have pre-signed docs ready at a friend of mine, so he filled them in and put all the docs on mail to ADAC. (with copies of documents etc.)
Simply prepared and Excel-sheet for my mate with all the info for our two bikes etc, very easy.
I would easily take the risk of having him sign with my signature.... so faking my signature and get it over with.
MAKE SURE ALL INFO IS THE SAME AS ON YOUR DOCUMENTS!
e.g. our bikes were both imported in the past from other countries, and even though our bikes are the same, the 'model' is different on the bike documents and so is the weight :-S.

ADAC was super fast, and mailed the lot to Buenos Aires within a week, so within two weeks we had the CdP's. (although it may take 6 weeks until you get it!!!!!!!!! be aware of this)

Sending the carnets out by DHL was 91 euro's by DHL... what a bargain! :censored:

Make sure you can transfer money via online banking or something, because you have to transfer the deposit (3000 euro's per bike) and costs of the carnet.
So per bike:
3000 euro deposit
195 euro's per CdP, if you are an ADAC member
- Shipment fee, per courier you'll have to ask the amount upfront.

You can find al info at:

Also, you can contact Mr. Mischa Schueller, very nice guy who speaks/writes good english: (I know this is not needed for you, but others may not be so fluent in German ;-))
