Country ID tag on moto

Well I've read various things that suggest I need a country ID tag on my motorcycle (those stickers on the backs of cars that identify where the car/operator is from) to operate it in foreign countries.

I've never needed one in South America, Central America, or Mexico. How about those of you who have ridden your bike in other countries - has anyone ever asked for, or did you have the id tag?

I'm hoping I don't need it because I can't seem to find where to get one in the US. Besides, I'm not excited about riding around with a big USA sticker on my bike identifying my nationality for all to see. In fact, if I'm required to have the sticker, and if I can find one, I'll probably cover it with tape once I get through the border crossings.

You mean the oval white sticker with the vehicle's country code. In theory it's required everywhere outside one's country of residence. In practice almost nobody cares about it.

The only exception to this that I'm aware of is Austria. In other Western European countries it's a good idea to have it, just in case you come across a jobsworth in uniform... Most likely any of the German speaking countries.
