Which countries is it LEGAL to sell foreign vehicles in?

A constant question is "where can I sell my bike at the end of a trip?"

This thread is to grow a list of LEGAL places to sell a bike from another country.

There are always illegal ways, from stripping for parts to selling for "off-road use only" but I don't want to include those here.

Hi,

I bought a bike in Peru with an peruvian registration- is it possible to sell the bike in the chilenian free ports and Paraguay as you said? Toby, the guy I got the bike from, explained to me that it´s not possible to sell the bike anywhere in SA!

Cheers,

Arved

IN THEORY - yes. In practice we're not sure. The only way to be SURE is to try it - and it may well differ depending on which country the bike is currently registered in. AND which nationality the purchaser is. etc etc...

And of course that's the purpose of this thread - if everyone reports the details of a transaction we'll know!

I have a question related to that topic:

If you import your vehicle into a country with the intention to sell it there, do you first have to export it from the country it's currently registered in? Or is that usually not necessary?

Last time when I rode from China to Laos on a Chinese registered bike I needed to sign a paper on the Chinese side of the border, promising I'll bring the bike back into China. This seemed weird to me, I'd expect the country where I bring the bike in to want me to either import it or leave the country with the bike after X days again. But I was surprised that the country I leave might care whether I bring the bike back or not. Is that a China only thing, or do other countries have the same?

Are there any places I can sell a bike in Europe? It's registered in SA. Thanks

that's very unusual - normally countries do not care if you sell it in another country. The country you bring the bike into very much care, as they usually want their duty and taxes etc. as on any imported item.
