Costs of a Carnet

Holy SXXX. just had my quote for a carnet, £1025 on a vehicle that was valued at £1000!! admittedly £600 of that is refundable on return of the vehicle but it still seems a whole lotta money. there is a bit of a monopoly on carnets now, is that the reason?

Maybe I am wrong but I thought you could buy insurance for the 600 quid part instead of having to front up the money ? Might be worth checking out...:confused1:

Not just insurance

You can also get your bank to guarentee it.

Lots of other stuff on here about it, but apparently a bank gurantee costs £140

the breakdown of the costs is
carnet £150
insurance premium £500!!! (50% refund on discharge of carnet)
insurance premium tax £25
refundable cash deposit £350 (what the hells that for, I thought that was the idea of having carnet insurance!)

Wow, that's steep! At the German Automobile Club (ADAC) I only paid 150 Euros which are not refundable and (for South Africa) 3000 Euros deposit, which will be returned when arriving back safely ;-)
