Confirm: No need for Carnet in South America!?

Hi all,

I've just spent the last half hour on the phone to a lady representing the Australia Autombile Association (AAA) from RACQ. I told her my plans and that I was planning on going to South America without a carnet and applying for it 6 months after in the states (for Europe - As i won't need it for the first 6 months). I can apply for it from overseas so as I don't lose 6 months of carnet for no reason.

My question is...She solidly states that a carnet is required for South America, and I've read many threads on the HUBB that it is not required at all in South America. Can anyone confirm for me that a carnet is NOT required in South America please???

Cheers a million,
Rossy.

You mean anyone who has not already confirmed this repeatedly? Sorry, that rules me out.

But yeh, we can all confirm it. Many already have. What do you want that you haven't already seen?

Mark

Haha, cheers markharf. That's just the paranoia getting the better of me. Couldn't remember how recent those other posts were and whether anything had changed recently (which I'd assumed not). But better be seen as stupid then be sorry later!!!

A nice good up to date answer for anyone else wanting the answer though ;)

no carnet need for all the Americas top to bottom.

Well for riding in, think there may be one in South if you ship your bike there they want one. I do not know the all the import laws But I did read something about that. There may be ways around that as well.

DLbiten...do you have a link or remember where you may have read that. That's my biggest worry. I mightn't need a carnet at borders, but may need one at the airport when I pick up my bike...
Cheers in advance!
