Colombia SOAT insurance
 

Beware the rules in Colombia have changed for SOAT insurance on foreign registered vehicles.
Do not buy at the border it’s FAKE insurance. If you are stopped the police will know it’s fake when they verify the number plate, and you’ve wasted your money.
We crossed from Ecuador last Friday 12/05/23 and tried to buy insurance in Ipiales. It’s impossible, we had to ride to Pasto the regions capital on Sunday and buy at Seguro del Estado head office on Monday morning. Expect a long wait if you’re not there early. The police are aware of the situation so if you’re stopped you maybe ok.
The helpful agents whose phone numbers pop up on various forums can no longer offer insurance to foreigners. Hopefully this may change but at the moment this was the situation for us.
