Carnets for Iran and the NatWest Bank
 

I applied for a bank guarantee (it's expensive to do it any other way) from the NatWest Bank so that I could apply for a Carnet for Iran and Syria. After initially agreeing the bank later changed its mind and refused on the grounds that It would be breaking the sanctions against Iran!!! if it authorised the guarantee. A load of rubbish but there you go.

Sorry to bump this old thread but what was your solution? Was this a NatWest one off or is it advised to use another bank? Any other British citizens done this recently and got through all OK?

Sounds to me like Natwest doesn't understand what a carnet is, maybe worth a try asking if they understand. Perhaps they spat the dummy as soon as they saw Iran. If that was the case I'm sure Paul G would be more than happy to take a call from them and put them straight.

I think that Peter changed his mind and went east only as far as Turkey - didn't go to Iran.

I've read many recent stories that one can get into Iran w/out a carnet. Anyone have very recent experience of this?
