Carnet prices are high!
 

I don't know if I'm being misinformed but a Carnet seems to be very expensive. I went down to the local CAA here in Hamilton Ontario and at first nobody knew what I was talking about but after them doing some research they found all the info about them and the cost blew me away. They told me the cost of the Carnet starts at $700 plus taxes. Then I would have to put up $18,000, and out of that money I get about $15,000 back when I bring the bike back within 12 months. Does this sound normal?

I can't believe it.......
In Germany we have to pay 150 Eu for the paperwork. On top of that we have to pay a deposit(for bikes one price for all countrys) of 3000EU for bikes. They refund the deposit when you hand the carnet back and the bike is back in the country of origin (or somewhere else...)

Diffrent deposit for a car ( for Egypt, India, Pakistan..) ....

The local CAA isn't usually aware of carnets as it's a fairly rare document. They have a specialist that handles all the carnets and you can email her at SDanis'at'national.caa.ca (Suzanne Danis). She's extremely helpful and knowledgable.

As for costs, there is an application fee which in non refundable. It used to be about $350.00 but that was a couple of years back. The money you put up as the deposit depends on your bike and the countries you intend on visiting but this all comes back to you once you return, usually within the life of the carnet which is five years, but has to be renewed every year. I think they have an online calculator and a website that explains a lot of the process. In addition, there is a ton of material on HU if you look around.

Here in the UK you can get the bank to "guarantee" your carnet cost or have an insurance company cover it..

My DRZ is worth £1000 on the document, 800% for Egypt gives me an £8000 bond.

The bank guaranteed that amount for a fee of £175. Document and admin fees were about £250 !

All in, sub £500 (of which I will get NONE back).

With a carnet , it REALLY pays to have a cheap bike and avoid Egypt !

We just purchased our Carnets here in OZ my F650gs twin I Valued at $10000 and total insurance premium I paid including $250 app fee was $1125. That included Egypt which is only 150% for OZ registered bikes, I think you guys are being ripped off with your 800%. Who sets the price ? Is it your own Automobile Club or Egyptian Govt. I suspect it maybe your own organisations !

paul - i assume you went to your dealer and asked for the cash price on your bmw, and he told you 10k, and gave you a letter, which you included with your carnet application.

what you should have done.... go to the dealer, tell him the bike has 11,000km on the clock. it is going to miss the 20k service, the 30k service & the 40k service. incidentally you're gonna run it on diesel oil, leaded petrol, overload it and probably crash it a few times.

now watch the "value" plummet.

no-one at egyptian customs has any idea the value of your bike. 5k sounds just as convincing as 10k to someone who earns 1k a year.

Here in Belgium it's 100% of the current value of the bike (new rule since this year), even for Egypt (but for Egypt there is a minimum deposit of 3000 euro) plus 235 euro for the carnet. I put down the deposit cash on the account of the automobile club, so there's no bank invalved (cheaper).

Dam!! Sounds like we are getting ripped off here in Canada. Fees fees and more fees!!!!! Might be cheaper to buy and sell bikes as I go. Much more of a hassle though.
