Carnet or not, Egypt, Syria, Jordan - conflicting information

Anyone in Egypt (ideally entering from Jordan)? Is carnet needed? We are getting conflicting information :-(
Same question for Jordan and Syria where it seems (accoridng to information gathered) carnet is not needed.
Thanks,

Definitly needed for Egypt.

Getting into Egypt is bad enough with a carnet, I shudder to think what it would be like without one. Look on the bright side though, in Egypt you get to race through towns and villages with a police escort, whether you want one or not. ride safe.

Yup, Egypt is a nightmare to enter even with one !!

We HAD to have one before we could even get on the ferry in Italy.

Carnet

Yes, definately needed for Egypt and also the most expensive country with respect to the bond you need to deposit with the automobile club. Make sure the car/bike papers and carnet are in the same name otherwise you are seriously screwed and you can only bring one vehicle per person into the country.

Cheers,
Noel

Egypt is off

Egypt is off… Although we may be in position to obtain a carnet, the problem we are facing is of a different nature. Thank you all for your kind contribution. We will end up our journey at the Red Sea resorts of Jordan. Egypt will have to wait.

I visited Egypt for three weeks a few years ago and had nothing but great memories ! (without bike)

Doing it on a bike was a royal PITA ! The costs, paperwork, beaurocracy, bullshit, waitng around and endless bribes, rip offs, and hand outs made me end up hating the place.

There are some FANTASTIC people in Egypt and you can have some great times but its usually ruined by the majority of people who look at you like a pay cheque who they can play with at their leisure ! And thats just the officials............:frown:

Nothing would get me to take a vehicle through Egypt again !

As others say Egypt is way above the odds. Syria you can buy a temporary importation permit at the border a lot cheaper than a carnet and the last time I went I didn't need one for Jordan.

Germany seems to be a good palce to buy a carnet.

I follow your blog :thumbup1: and was going to ask you about your trip through Egypt with regards to carnet and other paperwork etc. It's a real shame, I'd like ride Egypt but the carnet price is a deal breaker. So did you use an insurance indemnity scheme for your carnet or did you just reluctantly cough the deposit?
