Carnet & Intrantional driver's license renewal

Having read the pages, I still have two questions. We will be on the road for aprox. three years. What are the easiest ways to renew both Carnet (from Canada, since I am a U.S. citizen) and lincense? Two, Can the Carnet card have a delayed activation period? We don't need one until we get to the Middle East and Africa, but will have been on the road more than one year befroe arriving there. Can we apply for the Canadian carnet from say, Spain where we will be stopped for aprox. one month? After retiring from the university we will spend two months getting the last details taken care of before hitting the road in February. Would it be helpful to inquire from the Canadian club, or do they work like U.S. officialdom and just not answer mail?

I've asked the local auto club here .. and they will renew both carnets and IDP that they issued previously.

I'd sugggest you ask your local auto club that issues them .. they should have the answers .. may take some time to find teh person that 'knows' .. once you have found that person - get their name!

Not sure if this is helpful or not, but on a UK carnet activation can be delayed(I'm doing this myself next year as I'll be well into my trip before I need to use a carnet.) I assume that other countries carnet systems will be similar. If I were you I'd get in touch with the Canadian version of the AA(Automobile Association) Hope this helps and good luck with your trip!!
Cheers Derek.

carnet

thank you frank and del boy. your answers seem like what i had thought. i will write to the canadian club soon and begin making arrangements. the old drill instructor always said "the only stupid question is the one you never ask."

somewhere, someone has the answer and for traveling a a bike, this is the place.

Carnets issued in the UAE can be extended beyond the normal one year without fuss for a fee of about USD80.

I had to get a new carnet (Aussie one) for my bike. It was a year and a half out of date though, so i may have been able to get an extension if it was still current. I had to pay for everything again, except the deposit.
For Australian carnets, the start date of the document is the date you pay for it.
