Bad news my friend. I'm just about to embark on a UK to India and the info I have is that Turkey is the first place you need a Carnet!

You may want to double check with Sue Collins at the RAC (her number is in another thread somwhere on this site).

Well, I'm in Turkey at the moment and entered at the border with Iran. I didn't need a carnet. Nor did a guy I met here who came the other way, through Greece. It costs just two or three dollars at the border, and they stamp it into your passport and give you a customs form. It proves rather trickier if you need to abandon the bike, though, as I discovered...

James,
Can you clarify how you were in Iran without a carnet? Thanks.

It's a long, painful and expensive story, detailed in my blog - Travellers' Stories (Whyte, James). Possible on a good day but not recommended unless you have to!

Hey Prone,

Glad to hear you can get away without a carnet for your trip to Turkey mate, sorry for putting you off track at the start there (thats inexperience for you!)

I'm heading to India early July and also live in south London (Brockley) so if you want any more info on my plans or fancy a beer drop me an email.

To clarify this, you do NOT need a carnet for visits to Turkey for less than 3 months. If you wish to stay longer you will need to use a carnet but also get a longer visa. 3 months issued a border for £10. If you over stay there is a big fine and if you refuse to pay you are banned from re entering Turkey for 18 months. Chris
