carnet de passage
 

Hi,
We will be driving to Iran from London in summer 2010.
I have been told that we need to get carnet de passage for the car on entering Iran.
I did a bit of re-search and it seems the paper work is a lot of hassle and time consuming. In addition I have to leave a deposit of Four hundred % to get this paper work.
This to me seems rediculously high.
Question:
What happens if I drive to the border without this paper work?
Can I get it by the border? Will it be easier and cheaper there or may be I might get into the country without one?
Have you had any experience in this field please?

You have to get the carnet before arriving at your destination. The country your visiting does not issue it. The carnet is basically a bond you get to show customs that their country will be indemnified should you lose the car or sell it in the presumed country you are entering. Iran is a country that does require carnets from what I understand. So that being said....you are taking a big risk driving up to the border knowing they require a carnet and not having one to provide. Might you pass????maybe...probably not. If that is a risk you are willing to take then it is more of a personal choice not something that I or most on this forum would advocate. Good luck and I hope I helped you.:thumbup1:

Whats the car worth? How far can you write the value down? Trade price less loads for the tatty condition:whistling:

Hi,
Does anyone know the cost (Customs, etc.) of driving into Iran and it's complications on the border?
I Called the Iranian embassy in London but surprizingly they do not have this information.
I am trying to find out if the amount I will have to pay on the border is less than getting a carnet here in UK.

Deposit Not necessary
 

Hi there,

You are wrong if you think leaving a deposit is the only option in the UK. You can also pay some insurance or have a bank guarantee. We are going down the bank guarentee route, which is going to cost up £100 from NatWest. I think we will also pay admin fee to RAC, but still for us it's a lot cheaper.

You should speak with Paul Gowen from the RAC (who is a member and reads all the carnet threads on here eventually). Pm me if you would like his details, I should be checking back in at some point this weekend.

You mean you only pay about £100 to Natwest + the admin fee to RAC and nothing else?
Do you have to value the car you are driving with?
I always thought you pay based on the current value of the car?

Hi there,

The Bank guarantee is based on the value of the car. In our case it is a gurantee for up to £5000, based on wheere we are travelling. Basically Nat West are being paid approx £100 to gurantee that they will pay the £5000 if something goes tits up. You would, at that point, of course be subject to owing Nat West (or which ever bank) £5000.
