Carnet Dates

Hi there.
(Apologies if this question has been asked and answered previously... i haven’t found an answer. )

I’m trying to organise a Carnet for a trip from South Africa up the east coast through the middle east to India.

The carnet (through the RAC) is asking for specific dates for entry/exit. But, i’m planning on mostly winging it (i have the luxury of time) and i don’t want to get too tied to a schdule.

It it okay to put down some rough dates? Is having to follow specific dates the usual process for traveling under a Carnet?

Thanks for your help.

Your carnet can be valid from any date you chose (though it can only be post-dated by a limited amount of time) and it is up to you to re-export your vehicle from any country which you have entered using the carnet, within the one-year validity of the document. There are no further constraints on when you can enter any particular country; the carnet only needs to be valid.

If there is a country that I decide to visit, but that isn't listed on the carnet, will this mean I cannot enter the country?

Not necessarily. Some countries (e.g. all of Europe and the Former USSR) do not use the carnet for passenger vehicles, they have their own mechanisms for temporary import.

There are relatively few countries where you must have a carnet in order to temporarily import a vehicle. Egypt, Pakistan and India are probably the only ones on your route.

Thanks. It seems like its not an issue, according to the AAA.
