Carnet cost calculator

Hi,
This is my first post so I hope I get it right. I looked into carnet cost earlier in the year and got all the details from the RAC. In order to work out how much it would cost me I threw together a spreadsheet thing on which you can adjust the vehicle value and the maximum duty so you find out the costs using the insurance scheme. I thought that was easier for me than the bank guarantee or putting up the money ahead of time. I have put this sheet on my website (at the link below) and people can download it if they find it useful. I believe it is up to date and accurate but if there are any errors I would welcome constructive criticism. On the same page I have put the ICMV application forms I obtained fron the AA.
Good Luck

no BANK GUARANTEE

unfortunately the Bank will not do guarantees for this type of thing.. AA want the money deposited so you have to get the full $35K out if you do this. But looks like we dont need Carnet.. so we're going to chance it and just drop off Egypt, Libya, Tunisia....shame.. but hey - its going to be fun anyway.. thanks for all the info everyone :thumbup1:

Yes Bank Guarantee

Having just spoken to the UK RAC I can confirm that the will take a bank guarantee, although there is a £45 charge for that.

After that it is up to your bank.

Perhaps this differs country to country.

You'll need property to secure the bank guarantee like I did, failing that, the insurance route would be your best option. I think its about 10% of the required sum so would be about $3500 for you, of which you'd get 50% back when you return the carnet at the end of the trip.

Sorry for bumping an old thread, but was wondering how does the valuation of vehicle work for a carnet.

Do they go on the purchase price or can I just tell them (within reason)?

Hey martin,

You tell them how much it costs, but dont take the micky 'cos then they will check.

Can someone please clarify this for me:

I've just been quoted £6000 for my carnet, if I get it on an insurance indemnity does that mean I only have to fork out £ 600 for my carnet + charges? And when its returned later I'll get £300 back?

Please help as my heart sank when I opened the RAC cash quote this morning.

Sound's about right but best to phone Paul at RAC (don't email or you'll be waiting a while, he is usually pretty busy)

10% of the 150% (for most of Africa) is the insurance cost, but fees can add a not inconsiderable chunk on top of that again.
