Carnet checks on the Border

Hello all,
i just got my carnet, and while cheking i noticed that they missed one letter of my Engine no. , instead of 4 they wrote h , now my question is, how strict are they at the customs ?? Do you think an error like this will creat major problems ...

A second Question :
On the slip that the customs has to fill there is the note "voucher registered under no....... " what has to be filled here ??
Thanks for the usual cooperation.

Mauro

It can cause major problems if your carnet is not 100% accurate in countries such as India. When we entered India we found that one of our carnets was wrong and it took several hours and plenty of baksheesh to get the bike cleared by customs. To save yourself potential headaches it's probably best to send the carnet back and get it amended.

Hello Mauro,

It will be fine 99% of the time, but sooner or later they will check everything and then it will be a lenghty and expensive process i reckon....

grtz

You didn't tell us where you're going, Mauro. If you're going to Egypt, hold your breath when entering the country at Aswan. There an old geezer with thick glasses is employed by Customs to put a piece of paper over your chassis number and rub it with a pencil until the number thus rubbed shows on the paper, which he then forwards to the customs inspector, who is just waiting for a thing like and h for a 4. But a bit of baksheesh will solve the problem in your favour (let's hope). I don't want to rain on your parade, but here it goes: When I went through in 2000 another biker on a bike borrowed from his brother in Germany got caught with a carnet in his brother's name. He had to wait in Aswan for two weeks until the problem was solved. So, perhaps start praying to Allah. This certainly would help in Egypt.
