Can I GIVE a uk bike away in Italy?

The idea is to ride 2 up from Prestyn in Wales to Naples. I've got 30 days. I'd rather spend the time in the neat places, not hunched over trying to get 50mph on the return trip.

What stops me from simply giving the bike to somebody in Naples? It's mot'ed, taxed, well maintaned, near new consumables. I just don't want to ride it back. Can I donate it to a local bike shop? Can I donate it to a Hubb member who lives in Naples?

Nothing stops you from doing that at all, and you can leave it in the hands of the next person to arrange/struggle with/fail to get the relevant paperwork.

All you'd have to do is say it's been permanently exported from the country it is currently registered in.

Doesn't the Schengen agreement allow for this? I read somewhere that it's little more than re-reregistering the vehicle. I'd have thought someone would be only too happy to take a free bike, though I suspect the OP could even sell it.

What bike is it and when are you going to be there? :mchappy:

All the Italian "buyer" would need is the V5, or whatever they call the registration document up there, cancelled for exportation, (I believe that all you have to do is fill in some part of it or other and send it back to the DVLA...as well as a sheet of paper saying, in Italian, that " I, the seller do hereby sell this bike to him the buyer for X euros, and by signing this contract both parties are happy etc etc..." .
After that it's the Italian buyers problem. Of course the EU agreements make this kind of thing easy, in theory , but I just spent the past 4 months trying to register an old vespa I bought over the border in Slovenia.....:funmeterno:

Italian burocracy is not much fun, and you may actually find that people here will be deterred from accepting even a free bike due to this.

By the way, what bike is it? I may be interested..... (even though I'm not in Naples)

It a really cute as a button...

1980 Honda CD200T. Drum brakes, 6 volt electrics. Kick and electric. Dead simple and reliable. Carries 2 up (310 lbs). As long as I get to see Rome and Pompey is all that matters. If you want it, arrange to meet me near a transport route that will take me to an airport so i can fly back to manchester. Drop off date October 3rd or so.

Why not ride it down there, store it with a HUBB member in Naples and when you're back home advertise for a UK resident to do the reverse trip and ride it home over their chosen route. Obviously there would be insurance issues, but they could surely be overcome.

good idea, if i can find someone to store it for free for the winter. By October, how many would be considering a trip to Wales on a 200?Maybe it can become the Naples "town bike"?
