Can I get a Thai carnet? British citizen
Hello to all.
Sorry if this question has been asked before but couldnt find any info. After a 27,000 mile trip to Mongolia and back on a 125 Vanvan, my next plan is to fly to Thailand, buy a second hand 125cc bike and cruise around south east Asia, India and Nepal and finally bring the bike back to Thailand. Can I get a carnet from the Thai AA? How much will it cost? Any problems you can see with my trip??? Many thanks, Jono :scooter: |

ราชยานยนต์สมาคม [U]would[U]be the auto club to issue a Carnet, their website (Google translation)includes no information/ reference to issuing Carnets. Not all AA issue Carnets. According to the international Carnet authority, Public - Carnet de Passages en Douane Thailand does not itself require a Carnet. So it's possible that RAAT doesn't even issue Carnets You need to check with RAAT directly: Thailand (Royal Automobile Association of Thailand) You also need to know Whether & how easy/ difficult it is for a non-Thai to buy & register a vehicle in Thailand--since a Carnet would/ could only be issued to a locally registered vehicle, assuming Thailand issues Carnets. You mention "cruising around SE Asia" including India & Nepal. Does that mean you were expecting to ride overland through Myannmar/ Burma to get to India & return? Although Burma is "beginning to open up" to overland motorcycle tourists, it's still very difficult to do that. You might also try this website: Ride Asia Motorcycle Forum to get direct local information to help answer above questions good luck |
Yeah I was planning to go through burma, I had heard thet people have been through and the guys in the link you sent me went through a few years ago so hopefully its getting easier all the time.
I have emailed the Thai RAAT so I will wait to see what they say in the morning or when and if they reply! My other thought was to buy a bike in Malaysia, they are a "carnet country" so maybe they could issue me one. but like you say, I will need to make sure I can get all the documents in my name. Cheers for your help mate. Jono |
As I understand it,,,,could be wrong but I have read alot and thought there would be no problem/issues to buy a yamaha fz150i from kok motors in Malaysia and travel through Malaysia (not Singapore) and Thailand Laos and Cambodia. Have another plan for Vietnam a must see
Then sell it then fly to Nepal buy something there and do Nepal/India |
ok yeah that sound viable. thing is I really want to do the whole thing on the same bike. do you know if malaysia can issue carnets to tourists?
