Can a foreigner buy a 'local' bike in Ecuador?

I know that in some countries such as Argentina you just can't.

Do you know how it is in Ecuador? I'm not sure if you can register the bike as a tourist. As far as I know registry procedure is done at the police and you may need a 'cedula' (ecuatorian Id) for that...

I just want to buy a pre-owned bike there and then ride to Argentina

Any experience?

Thanks!

I´m quite sure Patrick (Bulliiit) could give you more details about this as him and his brother bought two bikes in Quito and travelled to Argentina on two 125s earlier on this year, they must know all it takes to do it and how long that would be. They put a link to their stories but they are in French, if you understand it, it may help OR get in touch with them.
