California Registration - Affidavit of Non-Use (REG 5090)

Hello,

I am a US Citizen, live in California, and have my bike actively registered there. I am currently travelling through Central and South America on the bike for 6 months. My AAA insurance would not cover me internationally, so I canceled it and opted for local insurance in each country.

The CA DMV has just sent me a notice to suspend my current registration since I no longer have insurance. Rather than pay for liability insurance in the US while I am not there, I filled out the Affidavit of Non-Use. I did this under the assumption it would not cancel my current registration. However on the FAQ page it says it will cancel the reg. My goal was not to do this as I need to easily renew my registration by mail/internet while on the road.

Does anyone know if filing the ANU(REG 5090) will actually cancel the reg? I am reading conflicting info on the DMV site, so anyone with experience would be appreciated.

From DMV FAQ:

"Upon receipt of a REG 5090, DMV will cancel the registration"

From DMV Financial Responsibility Page:

"After filing the ANU, the vehicle's insurance may be cancelled. However, if the vehicle is still not in use when registration renewal fees are due, you must pay renewal fees or request the vehicle be placed on planned nonoperation (PNO) status."

The latter seems to indicate you will still be sent the registration renewal form at the end of or your registration period, despite having an ANU. That is what I am hoping for.

Thanks!
