Buying a motorbike in Kyrgyzstan and travel to Europe
 

Hi all!

We are currently traveling from China overland to Europe. For some reason we got really bored of public transport and are thinking about buying a motorcycle in Kyrgyzstan and take it as far as we can, hopefully all the way back to Germany.

Has anybody ever done this and has some advice for us?

From what I learned in this forum we need the following things to take a vehicle across borders (for non-carnet countries):

Drivers License
IDL
Registration papers
Insurance (depending on country, and usually purchasable at the border)

To do it properly we would have to register the bike in our name which I guess is not possible for foreigners in Kyrgyzstan. So this is the tricky part which we need to find a solution for. We have two ideas so far:

1. Get it registered in a locals name with a power of attorney allowing us to drive and sell it.

2. Probably cheaper and easier: getting some old german plate sent to us and forge some registration papers accordingly.

Do you think one of this is possible? Say as far as Turkey at least?

How does it work in Europe? Can we get some sort of transit plates and a green card?

We don't want to register the bike once we are back home, we just want to get there and probably set it up in the garden! :cool4:

Please help us out and tell us about your experience. Every little detail is very much appreciated!

Yes we did. Buying one was fairly easy. Registering one was a little adventure: 3 days of driving around Bishkek and a lot of bakshish everywhere. All this was for a "transit plate" which in retrospective I think we wouldn't have needed. It actually made it harder on some borders. Uzbekistan for example wouldn't let us in without an escort. (so we skipped it)
Russian and Kazakh borders where pretty straight forward. Ukraine had some time consuming bureaucracy and on the Polish border we spend almost two days... However, we got the bike all the way back to germany in the end...

So yes: possible! ;-)

I am planning to fly into Kyrgyzstan, buy a bike and ride to western Europe. A buddy of mine who has a bunch of riding experience was thinking it may be tough to get a decent bike in Kyrgyzstan. If you have a minute I would really appreciate you taking me through your experience.

I am planning to go from India into Spain crossing China and the -TAN countries on a foreign (Nepal) registered bike, entering Europe through Turkey...

Could you tell me the route you did and if there were problems with the bike being non european to enter and ride through Europe?

Any special documents needed a part from the ones you mention?

Leaving the bike in your garden has not been a problem?

So guys - did you manage it to get back on the motorcycle you bought in Kazakh/Kyrgyz to Europe?

So I was wondering if the paperworks actually doable? What is the best way how to do it?

Should I buy that (or some local will buy for me in Kazakh or Kyrgyz´ and I will get power of attorney) - get transit plates - ride through kazakh borders - russian border - ukraine or latvian border to EU.

So what are the costs of the paperwork and is it doable - getting transit plate (how much does it cost?) and should I expect that I will have to bribe on the borders/pay high fees?

Or is there any other better option there?
