Buying bike in Peru, Sell Chi or Arg?
I'm in the process of buying a bike in Peru and riding S America for a while and then either returning to Peru or selling somewhere south. Does anyone have any info on the implications/limitations of selling or crossing borders as a gringo with a Peruvian bike? Also, any info on ability to cross with Peruvian bike from Argentina to S Africa by boat/air? Any info on someone in Lima with good info on buying bikes would be extremely helpful to get this show on the road. Cheers

Although it is some years ago things might be the same still. In 1994 I bought a car in peru and when I wanted to leave the country (tried to get to Chile and after that Bolivia. both without luck) I had to have a carnet de passage (and leave a guarantee of US4000)!! So this time not to enter a country but to leave the 'homecountry'of the vehicle. So get information before buying a bike in Peru from the SUNAT (customs) and /or the automobil club the peru (Lima, San Miguel?) otherwise you will be send back to Lima when arriving at the border.(not even bribing them was possible...).
Then, to get the documents on my name was very complicated too (had to go through a 'notario".and took 8 months to get the paperwork in hands...(I was living in peru at the time so that was not such a problem, but for a traveller ...!) |
Hi Cyrusa, we are currently in Peru also, andlooking for a bike to buy, after spending some time on the web and talkingto some people it seems that buying and registration on your name can be done in Peru (also in Ecuador) and then you do not need the carnet to cross borders in SA. as I wrote before, make sure that you don'' t need anylonger a Carnet to LEAVE Peru ( issued by the Touring y Automovil Club del Peru, Calle Cesar Vallejo 699, Lince (tel: (01) 441 0345), http://www.touringperu.com.pe ) . For the rest of the travels you wont be needing it...I know it sounds weird but that is how it was back in 1994. Even then one did not need any carnet in the americas either ,not even in 1986 when i did my first S_C_N america tour with a european bike. But with a peruvian vehicle it was needed to leave the country as they want to be sure that the vehicle would be returned to the Peru as there are (were) exporttaxes to be payed if this was not the case.

I guess the thing is about buying the bike in Peru, registering in your name and rather not coming back (then sending importing sweet home europe). in such a case they woudl rather not need any carnet as this logically is to ensure you do not sell in a different country than purchased without officialy making import (and paying taxes etc) but of course this is only what i think they all say here no carnet anymore but needs checking regards konrad |
As I am told, legally, no. Could be loop holes though.....
