bringing UK bike back into UK via Heathrow

I got hit for £150 the other day for "customs forms" (NOT duty, just paperwork) at Heathrow. has anyone found a way out of this? a friend's bike is due back shortly and I'd rather pay the old-fashioned £70 for unloading and clearing. I rummaged around the HMRC site, but only found stuff on bringing non-EC vehicles into EC as personal effects.
thanks
Rich

And a welcome home to England, wait until you try to fill the Bike up it doesn't half sting.

I'm paying just over 85p a litre, but in the UK I think it's about £1.02 - £1.05 a litre, and another hike is just around the corner in Jan.

In the US I think it's still like less than $4 a GALLON.
