Bike insurance in Europe
 

We're about to begin our trip from Bangladesh to the UK. I understand that it is possible and necessary to get insurance at the border or elsewhere in India/Pakistan/Iran and Turkey but what about Bangladesh and Nepal? We are probably just going to ignore the issue where possible but once we get past Turkey, I imagine the authorities are going to be a bit stricter. When we lived in Britain we just got a green card from Norwich Union or whoever when travelling in Europe, but having called several insurers in the UK, as well as the AA, noone is interested in insuring a foreign registered bike(Australia in our case), especially before it even arrives in Britain. I don't remember receiving much sympathy from British policemen over missing documents, so we're quite keen to get cover if we can. Has anyone got any ideas about how to get cover in Europe when approaching from the East?

Hi, we need to know the same things. But what insurance do you mean. Do you want to insure your bikes or other people and or their property. We are riding N.S.W. registered bikes and buy 3rd part insurance at each border we cross. Except for cambodia. They hardly have roads, never mind insurance. Wont that be the same in Europe. That was what we were led to believe. We are about to go into Laos and am not sure if they have any compulsory insurance.

I suppose the only insurance we are really looking for is the minimum to satisfy local law. It would be nice to have fully comp insurance world wide but from experience so far, that seems pretty unlikely. We have recently received some further info having spoken to the NRMA in Australia. They gave us an address in Milton Keynes in the UK. They appear to be in charge of issuing 'Green Cards' from the UK (ie anyone in the UK who wants to drive a vehicle anywhere in Europe has to get their insurance company to issue a 'Green Card' which gives them third party insurance while overseas). They said there's no chance of obtaining UK insurance outside of the UK (you have to re-register your bike in the UK first) and advise that the best thing to do is when we get to Turkey, buy local insurance at the border but at the same time ask for a 'Green Card' which would then cover us for the rest of Europe. It sounds a little unlikely but then there really don't appear to be any formal systems in place for people like ourselves. Good luck!

Try the ADAC (AA) shops in Germany. They sell third party insurance on a monthly basis for foreign registered vehicles.
I have never been asked to prove insurance with my german-registered bike, neither in Germany nor abroad. But I try to be covered whereever I travel, just in case.
