Austrian Vignette Requirements

I just got my IDP today, and the clerk at the AAA ofice told me that they just got word that Vignettes are required for ALL Austrian roads.

This page states: "Toll stickers are required on all vehicles on Austria's motorways and highways!"

I know that this applies to the Autobahns, but does this now also apply to ALL roads within Austria?

TIA

Cost is very low anyway - euro per day for few days - but I was told it was required for all roads. Trouble is they don't make the signs all that obvious before the borders and there are none inside Austria. Get them at any petrol station and before and at the border.

Bulgaria has signs every few hundred metres along all roads that require vignettes.

In Slovenia the vignettes are only for the freeways and there are always alternative roads you can take. For my motohome they wanted 30 euro and we were only passing straight through at the skinniest part so it was reasonable to take the back roads.

You need it for all roads in Austria, most central European countries need them in fact.

Every filling station you pass for the last 30 miles to the border sells them, a lot ofthem have signs outside advertising them too.

True about them being available everywhere even outside Austria...motorbike sticker costs 5 Euros and its worth getting just for peace of mind (my Austrian biker mates don't bother with it and I'm usually the only paranoid one whenever I go there )

However you DON'T need it for normal roads!! ( tolled bridges and mountain passes have manned tollbooths and it's something totally different .)

As Donmanalo stated, Vignette is only required for motorways, not all roads in Austria.

The link below is to the Austrian Government help website that confirms this statement. It also provides the current costs.

Further, I have noted on Asfinag's (the Austrian toll administrator) website that they state "all Motorways and Highways" which is the probable cause of the confusion. However, I believe this wording to be error when interpretating to English as they should have used "expressway" not "highway" in their terminology. Their map provided within the link supports my comment (ie only highlights motorways):

I am based in Austria and from experience, can confirm that it is only motorways and at least one tunnel that I know of (Landecker Tunnel). From memory, all are signed accordingly.
