Australian buying a bike in the US and Carnets?
Hey guys, next summer i plan on buying a bike in Florida and riding up to Alaska and back down to South America.
I am looking at shipping to Africa and riding up to Europe. As an Australian buying a bike in the US what is the best option for a Carnet? I believe i wont need one till Africa so would only want to get it just before shipping my bike. Is this plan going to work? Best people to go with for a carnet? i was looking into www.adac.de in Germany. Any help is appreciated! :) |
Depending on which summer you are talking about (north or south hemisphere), the long heralded changes to the Carnet system may be in place so then you may either have lots of choices, or no choice at all if they are then all issued by the international office.

I think you will find no carnet required in the american continent.

I think if you do a search, you'll find a few riders who did all of Africa with no Carnet.

Yep no carnet required for the America's. You'll need clear title for your bike and proof of registration.
I just got back. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Africa can be done, (maybe), with no Carnet but I think it best to take one along. You can get into South Africa without one and I know of an American getting a Carnet in South Africa at a much better price than we use to get here. I am currently working through the international office and that is moving along easy. Everything is in flux at this time so best to check a couple of months before you want to ship to Africa.
