Another green card question
 

I contacted My insurance provider in the UK regarding obtaining a green card as well as having my insurance documents with me on a trip... They said no problem we email it and you copy it onto green paper...I thought it was illegal to produce a copy of a green card.. any experience on this subject would be appreciated...

I think there may have been a degree of tongue in cheek with that response. As I understand it (and pre brexit) UK vehicle insurance covers you for at least the legal minimum in all the other EU countries + a few hangers on. So you don't need anything else to be able to legally ride there other than having a policy in place. I usually take a paper copy with me 'just in case' but I'm not sure I need to. That's in the EU though (and as far as most UK insurance companies are concerned the EU is all there is). A Green card however adds in an extra range of non EU countries - Morocco, Russia etc but trying to get a 'normal' insurance company to issue one can be tricky. Pre EU - when the GC was all there was - it was easier but these days many of them have defaulted to EU and that's it. Issuing a formal GC is beyond what they'll do as they no longer have to.

You can of course print out your emailed insurance cert on green card but it's not a 'Green Card' in the generally accepted sense. I normally use white - the paper's cheaper. Post cock up brexit - all bets are off.

Wow, are you willing to share the name of the company that was enticing you into illegal act, that could put you in prison?
I am already suspecting who that might be, so help us all out by putting the truth out there, so any other community member wont end in prison as well.
If you don't have a hard copy in your hands at all time, you're driving/riding a vehicle that is then considered as not being covered with third party liability. Copying it onto green paper is even worst act if the police stop you during the routine check and follow the procedure.
2backofbeyond: you're mixing compulsory and comprehensive here, Simo is aussie and I suppose not a resident in UK. Your green card "paper" is part of your comprehensive coverage that you buy in UK, whereas Simo is not able to do the same, hence he's buying third party liability from provider that is enticing him to ride a motorcycle illegally by not sending him hard copy but even enticing him to print the scan on green paper.

Insurers are enticing people to break the law :(

Calm down guys!

With the impending Brexshit disaster, I am told insurers do need to issue green cards for UK insured travellers going to EU once UK leaves EU in a few weeks, and that they are not unreasonably simplifying the process by doing this electronically and getting the customer to print it on green paper.

Although in the car but on the 6t of April I'm travelling to Poland.

We don't want to risk spoiling our trip so whatever would be after 29th March I and my wife had already got 1968 IDP however it proves not easy to get GC.

I have called my insurer on 3rd March to get GC. After asking me of dates of my trip and countries I'm planning to go/drive through they said they will send me one FOC.

Nothing received so far so I called them last Friday. They said will send you another one that should be with you within 3-5 working days. And they clearly stated that in case of brexit my inurance is invalid outside of UK without GC.

So waiting impatiently for my Green Card to arrive.

We are a couple of kiwis Travelling to Europe this coming May spending 6mths with no set route just a long list of must sees.Contacted Dooby from lobagola.com great gentleman sorted Green Card for our trip for bike and our trailer you may be able to purchase cheaper but I have the documents which enables us to tick this issue off and focus on other items would highly recommend Lobagola and Doody.

Why would it be illegal? It's not illegal to e.g. photocopy it.

The legal aspect is that you *have coverage*. The green card paper itself is just so that you can always have the details at hand, for police/border guards/the other party if you get into an accident.

In many parts of Europe you're perfectly fine to drive without the physical green card if you can e.g. show a PDF of it from your insurance agency on your phone. In fact, the last time I got a speeding ticket (in the EEA, not even in the EU), they did not even ask me to show any proof of insurance.

Your right on Dooby , but the bike is comprehensively insured at the moment ... I was enquiring for the green card portion of the policy as a stand alone document on the vision of thinking going liability only.. I can only assume some UK insurers are unawares or ignorant as to what is required legally...
