american insurance at the mexican border

hello everybody !

I´m in Mexico and at the moment I´m heading to the american border (Ciudad Juarez/El Paso). I contacted American Underwriters and they mailed me that I would be able to get an insurance at the border. Could anybody confirm this information ? I expect to be there in 2 weeks.

Many thanks in advance

I crossed at Brownsville/Matamoros, and didn't see an insurance place quickly, so I ended up getting 6 months worth from here:

jasmineh AT motorcycleservices DOT com

Very helpful and quick, instant cover (UK reg bike).
$500 for 6 months. Ouch...

May want to try progressive at Progressive Auto Insurance - Car Insurance Quotes Plus Boat, RV and Motorcycle Insurance Quotes

I contacted already several insurance companies online (also progressive). As their service online is only available for americans they recommended me to contact one of their sales offices once I arrived in the US. All the big insurance companies have a representative in El Paso, so I guess it won´t be a problem. Anyway I would prefer to buy an insurance at the border so I can start my trip insured from day 1 !
I also have been looking for an american insurance in Mexico, but they only have these policies available for mexican residents.

Ahh boy you gave them a bit to much info.
Here is the way insurance is done in the USA. Each state makes its own laws. Like in Washington state you do not need any insurance for a moto bike. But in almost all others you do so If I go out of Washington I must have insurance. But If i get insurance in Washington it is good all over the USA (and Canada)
Now here is the kicker any insurance company can make up how much they charge and who they cover and where. Most are not wanting to cover any one not a US citizen as they know you need a licence. (to get that you need to ride a parking lot) There betting people that have that licence will not crash and can read the posed speed limits. BUT most never look to see if this is true! Most gust want to make a buck and just need an address for pricing. They do not want to insure illegals. There not going to stay after hitting someone most gust hit and run. And all the other laws that come in to play there now holding the bag. Dam paper work making people do this but that is the law. You are now lumped in to this. Mexican insurance is not legal in the USA. But I do not see a reason the policies available for Mexican residents will not work for you. There is no stipulation in the law that I know that the policies will not cover you, you may need a Mexican address for it work or just lie. (any one will do it is gust paper work)

You may be able to give them a US address and get insurance many people do this and get insurance.

I am not an US resident, neither am I Mexican (lots of people in USA think I am Mexican because where the hell is Spain? ... They do not know, but Spain sounds like Hispanic, so you are a fXXXing Mexican trying to steal my car)

But I had no problem to get a cheap insurance policy at Progressive for my US registered bike.

Ok here is what I did :

I got a 1 week insurance for the USA in Ciudad Juarez. Most people who sell american insurance only want to sell to people with mexican cars. So you need to go to an insurance agency in order to get an insurance for a foreign car.
As I will spend one year in the US and Canada I thought it would be better to get an american insurance.

I got the car insured in El Paso by an insurance agent of Progressive :

Sabino Lara, 1501 N.Mesastreet LL 402, El Paso, Texas 79902
Tel : (915)838-1501.

You need an address in the US in order to get an insurance. I could use the address of his office. The insurance covers the US and Canada (223$ for 6 months, which I can extend on line)
The main problem is that there´s no specific form for foreign cars. The computer simply refuses to continue without an american social security number etc.....You really have to find an agent who is willing to take the time and the trouble.

I also opened a bancaccount. I didn´t know you could do this without being a resident !
