Africa - Motorcycle Insurance
 

I am about to embark on a trip from Nairobi through Tanzania,Zambia, Botswana to Cape Town. My UK motorcycle insurance will only cover the EU, so would be interested what others have done for their motorcycle insurance when traveling through Africa.....Any info on this would be appreciated?

Is there no one out there that can provide advise on how to insure my motorcycle whilst riding my own bike through Eastern Africa as UK insurance does not cover outside of EU?

It is normal practice that when you enter any country you are required to buy insurance for your vehicle at the border crossing, However, such insurance is only to cover you for third party risks and is basically there in the event you have a collision with a local. Damage to your bike as a result of your riding such as falling off, or theft of the bike etc is not covered by this insurance.

Given the general state of the countries you are planning to visit compared to EU countries, t.e. poor roads, poor driving standards, poor health care, widespread corruption, high crime levels and poor policing standards, then good luck finding any company who wants to underwrite a policy against those risks.

Basically, if you want to go there, you have to accept all of the risk for the costs of repairs for damage to your bike caused by your actions and the cost of replacements to bike or gear if either or both are stolen.

If this is incorrect or if anyone has different information then please correct me.

You can get medical insurance for yourself whilst riding. Although this won’t cover you in places the government advises not to travel. For areas where travel is advised against google UK government travel advice
