[Africa] Carnet or not to Carnet?
 

Was just about to go stump up the cash for my Carnet, and I read this post (http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/hub...0-tenere-64769) which details people getting by without.

they do talk about needing to make certain "payments" along the way, but overall it seems cheaper, and easier than the Carnet.

Plus, it seems likely that I'll be paying bribes either way, so why pay twice (once for the carnet, and once for the bribes).

What's the general wisdom here? Was that a fluke, or can I really avoid the dreaded Carnet?

Route: circumnavigation of Africa, down the west, up the east.

Go with a carnet. It makes your life much easier.

You don`t need money on the borders, with the carnet, when you too have an insurance for africa. No money exchange and so on - much easier.

Inside of the countrys who the carnet is mandatory - you can meet some crazy bribery szenarios - when you papers aren`t legal.
