Vancouver,B.C. to Viedma, Argentina

I will be leaving Vancouver,B.C. early October 2007
Ushuaia is my ultimate goal, but would like to hit the meeting in Viedma.
My previous rides, the Dempster to Inuvic, Trans Canada to Newfoundland and Labrador, Texas, Copper Canyon in Mexico and the West Coast to Capo San Lucas have all been solo rides.
It would be great to team up with other riders on the way to South America.
I am well into retirement age, 71 to be precise, but feel comfortable with 600 km days. My ride is a 2000 650 GS.
Checking out some local attractions and meeting the locals should have higher priority then making maximum miles, unless there is the absolute need to knock off a thousand Km's
The trip is only moderately well researched and input from potential ride mates would be welcome.
GS Pete

My son and I are heading South in the Beginning of September. The plan is to head South in no great rush. We may start a bit ahead but if you are coming behind you may catch up, or not. Can't hurt to stay aware. <img> I am leaving the Seattle area on 8/27 to meet my son in Texas and leave from there sometime in early September

Hi Pete,

I'm in Montana at the moment, staying with Bill Ryder and servicing the bike(Honda Africa Twin). On my way South thru the States then taking a similar route to yourself. Hopefully we can hook up somewhere down the road. I too have retired but am a mere youngster at 58!
Keep it rubber side down.

Derek.

Hi Daryll,
Received your e-mail and replied in kind.
So you want to learn about the mechanics of the beast.
I on the other hand am struggling to handle the HUBB.
You know it is hard -or as in my case nearly impossible- to teach an old dog new tricks.
It's a brave new world if you grew up before TV; no not BC, just TV.

Hi Dereck,
I am not sure whether I should ride with youngsters, but am willing to make an exception in your case.
When will you be leaving Montana?
Lets keep in touch.
I would love to ride alongside an" Africa Twin."
Peter

Hi Chris,
It is neat to hear that you are riding with your son.
Too bad you guys are so far ahead-timewise- of me.
However, you never know.
If you stop for a lot of beers, and do a lot of side trips we might still run into each other.
Happy travels,
Peter

Hi Patrick,
I like your itinerary-all over the place and one day at a time.
As for cheap meds( isn't that a limey expression) living in Canada I get a cut from the Government.
Besides I have enlarged my panniers to take enough for three months.
Now I am just worried about US Costums in Blaine Washington.
As for old guys sticking together; I have proposed to name this trip
the "Geezer Cruise"
Be good,
Peter

Sounds like a great ride. I hope I can contemplate that when I am your age .... I spent last year doing this: www.nohorizons.net so I have learned a few things. Maybe some useful notes are here: main

Let me know if you need more info ... I'm dowtown. Where are you?

Hi Kevin,
Awsome! I just looked at your slide show, and surely want to know more about your trip.
Info, you ask; yeah I need tons of it.
Lunch is on me, should you ever have time to meet.

Peter, Patrick, Chris, Derek,

I too am an "Old Geezer" heading south this October if all works out. Seems to be a lot of us on bikes these days.

No particular place, no particular time, other than Spanish school in San Pedro, Guat. - just a relaxed tour. Sort of "spit in my hand, hit it and see which way it squirts" type thing. May end up in Ushuaia christmas day.

If you see a grey headed old bassar on a green '08 KLR, wave me down and I'll buy you a cervesa.

Peter Oechsler 24 Aug 2007 06:07

GS Pete

Hi Jim,
You seem to be riding my style; make it up as you go!
My ultimate destination is also Ushuaia.
Where will you be riding from?
After a bunch of solos,I thought it would be neat to ride with people.
I'll keep my eyes peeled for the green KLR, just to get my hands on the promised cervesa.
No rocking chair for us Geezers,
Peter

We will keep an eye on the board. If you see a KLR and a Ural that would be us. We will be easing through the country side.

Heading South

Peter and all,I will also be leaving Vancouver for S.A in late Sept or early Oct. I have lots of experience riding in North America but none south of the American boarder.I ride a 07 KLR650,I am 58 years old and would like to hook up with other riders for this trip. This will be a open ended trip for me as I am retiring on Sept 7/07. If you would like to talk more about this call me at 250-3987587. I am in Williams Lake B.C

Pete,
I'll be leaving NC around the first week of October. Have not decided where to cross yet, either McAllen or Presidio. Maybe CC, maybe not. Keep in touch and we will meet up somewhere.

Patrick,
Have you settled on "the" tire yet?? I'm curious because I'm still mulling the choice over -- mileage vs grip vs stability vs roar vs comfort vs vs vs??? Carry a 606 and ride a gripster for the first 8+k miles?? I'm still up in the air over 606's, Sahara 3s or Gripsters since the first multi k miles will be allmost all asphalt.

Chris,
A Ural/KLR combo won't be hard to spot.

Peter Oechsler 25 Aug 2007 21:25

GS Pete

Chris,
Yeah, looks that the timing could work out OK.
Again, I will be out of here -Vancouver, B.C.- first of October.
Would be great to meet up.
I am confused about "NC" You mean North Carolina?
Well,we will talk.
Peter

JimD 26 Aug 2007 02:12

NC = North Carolina

OkBob51 26 Aug 2007 05:11

I also am just retired (from education at 55) and looking for a riding partner/s. I'm flexible with starting dates and destinations. Mexico and Central America sound good to me. I'm an experienced rider but haven't ridden out of the US before. The security of a riding partner or group appeals to me. I would be riding an 06 DR 650. Camping or hoteling are both ok with me. I've finally got some time and a little money to piss away.
Are any firm plans being made that I might get in on?

Bob

adamsonwd 26 Aug 2007 05:39

Bob,I talked with Peter Oechsler on the phone today and we have a tentative plan to leave Vancouver B.C around the first of Oct/07.I think we both have small issues to deal with before we can confirm the date but we are both keen to go. Where are you located? We would likely be heading straight to Mexico?I think it would be great to hook up with a small group of people and ride together. My phone # is 250-3987587 if you want to talk about it in more detail.Hope to hear from you.........................................

This is a Hell of a tough issue. But in my garage sits
Gripsters, in my experience,
If you're riding with a Ural outfit you'll have room for everything...and then some.

Hi friends,
I start my RTW from Victoria, BC into WA state on 9/11. Making my way to Sandy Ego then on to the Baja for 16 Sep, Mexican Independance Day. Sweet!

About a week or two there, then ferry over to mainland Mexico. I'll be chilling and getting some Spanish and guitar lessons either in S. Mexico or Guatemala. I'm sure I'll be bumping in to all y'all at some time.

Hope to see you in Viedma and/or Ushuaia this summer (Dec '07)

I looks as though Wayne Adamson from Williams Lake,B.C. and I will be leaving Vancouver on or about October first.

Hi Derek,
I am still in Vancouver, but will leave on October first as planned
I'll ride through the U.S. pretty quickly, since my Canadian Insurance will run out on Oct. 8
I will likely ride with Wayne, another Canuck, who also for insurance reasons has to hotfoot it into Mexico.( Sounds like a couple of outlaws leaving town)
I'll keep our progress posted, so we will be able to hook up.
Keep in touch,

Any one not going to Ushuaia?

Hi folks,

I'm just stopping for a couple of weeks, around LA. Just done 9,600 miles around North America and would like to wander around South america for a while, trying to keep off the beaten track. Will be going to Baja middle of Oct, then over to Mexico. Keep an eye out for my black, heavily laden, KLR; the wales and UK stickers are a dead givaway. I'll be glad to at least gas a while. A beer, food and cigarette break are always welcome.
