US to Argentina - May 2007 onwards

Hi,

Will be seting off from the States, heading for Argentina from May 6th onwards. I hope to take in all of Central America and most of South America.

I will be riding an XR650L reasonably slowly :mchappy:

Would be glad to have any company on the way down.

Cheers

Alex

60-70 mph, until you hit Central America (or Mexico, not taking the toll roads), where you'll be lucky to average 60 kph. It's about the curves, the hills, the buses and trucks, the towns and those topes. Oh, those topes!

Hindu1936 6 Mar 2007 14:21

Topes equalling a more severe speed bump? On My trip to Guatemala in 63 there were no toll roads and 60mph then was really risky. then, it was potholes, missing pavement, gauges in the road. How much are the toll roads? a buck a mile--what?

SalCar 6 Mar 2007 15:32

gald to see more riders heading south! in addition to speed yuo guys need to talk about finances.. where you are planning to sleep. yuo can skip 90% of toll roads in mexico if yuo want to spend less money and see more. i´m heading north.. maybe we cross path at some point. i´m planning to move to brasil once my trip is over if you come this way let me know.

JollyGiant 9 Mar 2007 16:20

Hey Danno and Jorge

I am first going to Minnesota to pick up the bike from a buddies place (I am in London at the moment) and then driving down to LA for the 12th May to meet up with another buddy who will be joining me for the first three weeks into Mexico.

Once on my own I will probably chill out for a week or so somewhere by the beach which should give you the chance to 'catch up' etc

I will then be heading off on my own but will keep you posted as to where I am. If you fancy joining me and my Buddy from LA let me know and we will see what we can arrange.

Look forward to meeting you at some point :thumbup1:

Alex

We'll be around!

We're planning to arrive (from London) mid-May in Bogota. from there we'll take it easy for a couple of weeks. Going to Cartagena where hubby will try learn a bit of spanish in a school, then ride a bit in Colombia.
After that slowly riding south: Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia (salar de Uyuni is on teh cards!) ... visiting /sight seeing on the way.

Probably see you on the road. Keep in touch,

Cheers,

MikeS 10 Mar 2007 19:09

Hi Maria

After a few days in Cartagena, we´ve finally found an appartment in a good area of town (60,000 pesos a night) so tomorrow we´ll move out of our little hotel room into something with some space for a week till we find a boat.

I´ll post the address once I have the full details. If you´ll be here for a week or so, this place looks like the business and is MILES better than some of the rubbish we´ve looked at here.

Cheers

Hey Wayne

My mates and I will be messing around the US/MExican border for a few weeks (12th May onwards) until they have to go back to their lives and responsibilities etc etc - so I will be in Baja - or there abouts by the end of May and looking to head further South on my own - so It could work out that we could hook up somewhere along the way etc.

My email is alex.mellor@yahoo.co.uk - let me know what you get up to etc.

All the best

Al

Hey Kev,

Sounds good - keep in touch, although I warn you I am on an XR650 - and I'm shit - so will not be 'fast' etc.. so no doubt we should be able to cross paths at some point.

Fast doesnt bother me, my time is my own, just kinda taking it as it comes. So keep you eyes open for some Irish plates.. probably to be spotted in close proximity to a suitable drinking establishment!!

Statdawg 28 Apr 2007 02:46

Irishkev.

I live about 125 miles west on NYC if you need a place to stay. However I will be going to the BMW RA event in North Carolina on the 4th-5th of June.

Canoeguy

If your are coming from Oregon, you are welcome to crash at my place. I live in Modesto, California (in the Central valley at the foothills of the Sierra and Yosemite).

Honestly - we have plenty of room in our home.

Here is a suggested route - From the Oregon coast take 101 South through the Redwoods, south of Eureka, California take Highway 36. It is 4-5 hours of pure heaven, quite possibly the best motorcycle highway anywhere. absolutely incredible.

Feel free to respone to my personal email: tprata56@sbcglobal.net

Cool breeze,

tom:welcome:

Baja el proximo?

Long in the planning, finally starting out on the real deal heading south. First step is always when you break everything in. Will be happy to share the road with someone heading south soon. See next thread, it'll be the last I start for some time.
