UK to Norway, July 2016

I've resurrected my plans to have little trip - 5000(ish) miles - from the UK to Nordkapp, Norway in July this year. My plan is that it is an 18 day trip with provision to extend it to 20 if necessary and rush up through to Hirtshals, Denmark then reduce my mileage to 250 to 300 miles per day to travel up the west coast of Norway to Nordkapp. I will then travel south again via Finland and take an overnight ferry from either Turku or Helsinki to Stockholm before picking up my speed to return to the UK.

If anybody would like to join me for part or all of my trip please contact me but be aware that for me (rightly or wrongly) it's all about the travel and NOT about stopping at every town to see the sights of that location. That said, when I feel like some time off I will probably have a half or full day off the bike.

I will be doing this trip on my 1300 Pan European and the accommodation will be camping and/or low cost cabins.

I'm planning a trip to Iceland this summer - stopping-off in the Faroes during the course of events. Motorcycles go free of charge to Iceland during the high season - 14th June to 21st August - providing a 2½ night stop-over in the Faroes is arranged on the return to Hirtshals.

I'm flexible on dates providing my outbound ferry sailing date falls with the above time frame. Although I notice from the ferry operator's website - Smyril Line - that departures from Hirtshals to my destination(s) occurs twice weekly, on Saturdays (1530) and Tuesday (1130), therefore I'll be planning to arrive in Hirtshals with these particular days in mind.

Btw, I live down in Cornwall, therefore we could meet in Somerset somewhere (M5 service stn perhaps?) and keep in touch riding-up to our respective ferries at Hirtshalls DK.

I have a XL650V Transalp and a ST1300 Pan. Don't know which one I'll be taking yet, but probably the Transalp.

Let me know when you have decided on your leaving date.

Keith, I'd like to do a similar trip albeit on a smaller bike, and the key destination in mind is the Faroe Islands. I've a full licence but for some reason fancy the challenge of doing it on my CG125! I'd love to have a look at your route if you don't,mind, I'm in the very very early stages of planning. There's potentially 4 of us planning to do the same trip, all on 125's and would be happy for more to join.. beer

Just the Faroe Islands - or Iceland + the Faroes?

Tony LEE 13 Jan 2016 23:59

One of the good outcomes of drastically pruning their ferry routes a few years ago was eliminating the compulsory three day stay on the Faroes.

Keith1954 14 Jan 2016 00:11

Tony - according to Smyril Line, if you want your bike to go free in the high season, then you still have to stopover in Faroe for 2½ days (homebound), or 3 days (outbound). LINK

Hi Rachel,
I’m also planning a trip to the North Cape for July, together with a friend. But unfortunately we are going to take just the opposite direction than you.
Starting from Germany we will take a ferry to Helsinki. The plan is to cross Finland relatively quickly, because we’re also short on time (3 weeks). After we’ve checked the North Cape we want to take it a bit slower in Norway., e.g. visit the Lofoten, do some fishing.
If you like we can stay in touch to share some information and maybe meet up on our trip somewhere in Norway/Finland ;)

Cheers Daniel

Hi Keith,

I work a 4 on, 4 off shift (hence I have a nice round 20 days available) and the 1st July is my first day off, so I will be leaving early on the 1st to get on the Eurostar and into France by about lunch time (French time), so I'll probably book my train about 11:00. I am planning on two 500ish mile days to get me within a stones throw of Hirtshals for Saturday evening and I'll book onto the 09:00 ferry to Langesund on Sunday 3rd July.

Obviously, with that itinerary I'm pushing the boundaries for the first couple of days and for us to ride together and you to get the 15:30 ferry on Saturday it would be a challenge.

That said, I would be very happy to meet and ride with you if you feel that would be achievable because I'm always happy for early starts (and some company over a drink on the Friday evening bier)

Hi Daniel, the only reason I'm doing it the way I am is because my ride is all about Norway so if I get that done at the start of the ride I've covered it and in the event of something going wrong I've still got time to cut the trip short and/or pick up speed to make up time.

It would be nice if we stay in touch and (as you say) meet up as we pass

KenRachel 17 Jan 2016 07:03

Daniel, when are you leaving? we are also thinking of Finland, Sweeden, Norway and probably the route you are taking some time after Tridays in Austraia. But haven't decided, depends on when my time in the Schengen area starts, we might be instead going Romania, Bulgaria etc.

Hey Ken & Rachel, so far we only decided on june, we don't have a concrete date yet. I think around march we will set it up and book the ferry.

Cheers Daniel

KenRachel 19 Jan 2016 05:50

Do you have to book the ferry from Finland far ahead - I hadn't even thought of that!
Ken

phosphuga 19 Jan 2016 06:50

I think maybe that gives a better prices, but I'm not sure . Anyway that way we will be sure to get a restseat and don't have to book a cabin, which is far more expensive.

Cheers Daniel

There are several competing companies doing Finland to Stockholm runs, plus you have a choice of whether to go from Helsinki or from Turku, plus you can hop on a cross-gulf ferry and catch the overnight one from Tallinn (although that can be more expensive and can even sell out). You might get better prices buying ahead, but you certainly aren't likely to be left on the dock.
