UK - Siberia via 'The Stans' and Mongolia 2016 - Who's around ?

I think I'm finally going to be able to do this in 2016. I've got the freedom now that I'm self employed and I've got the funds in place.

I'm going on a Honda XR650L (Simple, reliable and capable) and planning on 3-4 months with a total budget of about £5000 for EVERYTHING. I think I'd like to get going in May 2016 to make the best of the summer and end up in Vllad or Magadan.

The plan a lot of camping/field cooking with the occasional cheap hostel/hostel. I'm hoping to do a 50/50 mix of trails and tarmac.

I'm just wondering who else is planning a similar thing and maybe find a couple of people to set out or meet up with or just to share route/visa information etc.

The simple, reliable and capable xr650l that made it only 30 miles up the M6 before breaking down on the way from (the) Wirral to Danny's a month ago? :scooter:

Well, the original engine was sitting on my bench as the head was away having new valve seats fitted which will last another 20 years..

So I threw a frankenstein engine in it to make the meeting. The engine which got it half way up the M6 was actually built from three old scrap engines which were all nearly THIRTY years old.

I thought it would last the weekend as I'd been ragging it around in that state for a few weeks. Alas, It didn't. In fairness, it was only a simple problem (Decompresser spring) but I didn't have the tools or time to fix it in a service station so it was easier and faster to go home for my Dommie to make the rest of the meeting.

I think it's a massive show of it's solid strength. That Honda will now spend the next 20 years overtaking broken down BMW's while their owners cry into their Latte's.

Smart arse.....:winkiss:

we will be heading that way as well in 2016. With the current plan we probably will not be heading further east than Ulaan Baator and Ulaan Ude.
Departure time should also be may(-ish).

our plans are always subject to last minute changes, but our preferred route would be to go via Ukraine (and possibly Moldova), Crimea, Russia, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbeidzjan, Iran, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Russia, Mongolia, Russia.

We may do part of the return on the transsib (irkutsk to novosibirsk).

Would love to exchange intel and route options and open to meeting up on the road and rising together for part of it.

send me a PM.

I'm thinking a similar route taking in lots of offroad trails. Once I hit Russia I'd like to ride the alti region, 110 and the BAM

I am planning a similar trip starting May next year and really keen to find someone to travel with for parts of my trip.

Looking to travel from the UK for a month or so in Europe, into Russia, Kazakhstan, Mongolia then weather permitting through the BAM, and up to Magadan in early August.

Then depending on freight options fly from Magadan or Yakutsk to Anchorage (probably via Kamchatka) then down to Oregon and across the TAT ending in Newfoundland taking 6 months total.]

I’m going to be camping a fair bit to keep costs down with only the occasional cheap motel in bad weather.

Planning on riding a current model 660 Tenere with as much off road as possible. I like the idea of riding Walter Colebatch’s Sibirsky extreme trail but can’t get the data anywhere.

Cheers
Dave
