I am planning to set off on my life long ambition by no later than May 2014. I am considering air freighting the bike from Iran or Dubai to Australia and once across Australia air freighting it to Ushaia or as near as possible. My reason for air freighting the bike from Iran is because I am lead to believe that Pakistan is very politically risky for western travellers? I have already toured India so that is why I am leaving this area out. I have also considered a route through China etc and down to Singapore but the cost of going through China (guide etc) makes this route less viable. I have spent the 30 years touring different parts of the world in order to give me a good idea of what to expect (NZ, S.Africa, India, Peru etc). I have retired from the fire service after 30 years and am a fit 58 year old. I know I am cutting things fine planning wise but last year was a tad difficult for many reasons and thus my planning took a back seat. Has anyone out there travelled this route especially the Iran to Aus freighting aspect. I am happy to travel with others who may be travelling part of this route. Timescales once on the road are very flexible (no fixed return deadline). Happy to discuss ideas etc with any like minded people. I have a GS 1200 but am now seriously considering the new CCM 450 as a different approach. Views advice welcome. Gordyman.
