UK to Portugal HU Meeting / Via France & Spain

Just putting this "out there" for now as registration isnt open yet and other plans are up in the air.

Iv been checking prices for getting myself and the bike to the Portugal HU meeting in August (24th-26th August 2007)

Ferry to Santander from Portmouth is £590 return and to Bilbau is only a touch cheaper at £500

Im thinking of hopping over to Calais (£50 return) and spending a few extra days riding down through France at a lesuirely pace (my bike cruises at 70mph max).

Theres also a 50:50 chance that I need to swing passed a friends place in Spain too too for him join the possy (and maybe others)

Anyone interested in joining me for part or all of the trip ??

Hi Andy

As long as it takes really. Nothings set in stone as yet.

I estimate 1 day to Calais, 2-4 days to cross France, 2-4 to cross Spain into Portugal, 3 days at the meeting then the same back or maybe get the ferry from Bilbau back to the UK to save time.

About 2 weeks I reckon. Maybe less, maybe more.

Open to ideas. I would prefer riding in a group.

As you know, we're still all up in the air over Portugal so we're organising a contingency plan 'just in case'. I've been checking out ferry prices from the UK so we can fit everything in when crossings are cheaper.

That said, try Ferry company: daily crossings, LD Lines ferry services - they can do Portsmouth - Le Havre for £63-78 return around the Portugal dates.

We've tried some camp sites out over the past few months, so if things don't turn out as planned and so long as we can get the dates at the camp site, we're looking at the second weekend in September. I think it's too late in the day to organise anything 'official' unless we can pull out all the stops and get some people down here for presentations, but it's all a bit short notice now.

Im in the same position. If the portugal meet isnt confirmed within the next 2 weeks then theres a big chance I cant make it. Booking time off work etc.

I would still like a trip to the continent before the year is up so If I dont make the Portugal meet then a trip down your way could be a viable alternative. :scooter:

The only problem it´s the language.

I have just been offered a new job in Motorcycle dealership.

While this is great news for me, ill be in a probationary peroid and as its the busiest time of year for selling bikes, i will be unable to get the time off for the HU meet :(

Big bummer I know.

hopefully Dakota and smoking lizard will do their shin dig later in the year when I can make it.

Trip to Portugal

Done the trip a few years ago and planning again for next year. If you get the chance don't give up the pleasures of the Pousada and Parador hotel chains in Portugal and Spain. Contact me if you need more details - I used a UK based firm and they helped me sort out for a group of 10 people.

As for the choice of ferry to Spain or ride through France. If time is on your side there is no option, two wheels is always better than a glorified bath tub across the Bay of Biscay.:mchappy:

Anyone going then?

Anyone definitely going by the Calais route?

I've posted to another thread as this one seems a bit dead. I'd be interested in sharing the journey through France/Spain. If anyone can give an idea about how long that might take then please share your knowledge. I thought that from Manchester to somewhere like Rouen and then to somewhere in the Pyrenees then perhaps 1 more stop before getting there...Maybe I'm way off the mark.

Thanks

Nicholas

Nicholas,
There are some useful comments about time and distance in one or two of the posts in here:-

http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/hub...l-france-19123

Other than that, the answer to your question is the proverbial "how long is the bit of string?". How fast do you want to ride, how often do you want to stop on route, how long do you want to ride each day, are you camping or hotelling, etc etc?

Yes Ted, it's on. Have sent you a mail today. Just confirming availability dates with a few people and will be posting the info within the next few days.

Not sure if mails are getting through to you - I'm using your new address, but send me a mail just to confirm it.
