Uk to Hungary/Romania/Bulgaria July/Aug 2013
I'm likely heading off from kent to Europe for summer hols. I'm a teacher so window of opportunity not flexible. Can leave 22 -23ish July and return towards end of Aug.
Looking to travel on my 650 Alp and camp (odd cheap hotel etc Ok), drinking bier, trying to avoid worst of the rain and :stormy:, failing to remember all the local language but still trying! Heading through Benelux/Germany to Czech rep. and Slovakia. Then into Hungary/Romania/Bulgaria check out transylvania, black sea etc. Then on return trip via serbia/croatia/slovenia into Northern italy for Alps, switz and home! Looking for anyone going that way or meet en route, maybe even another teacher. Hoping to do some light trail riding, but mostly going to be using Mr. Macadam I suspect - avoiding worst potholes in Romania. If anyone knows biker friendly campsites on the way I would be grateful for info. Cheers |
Highly recommend motocamping in Idilevo,Bulgaria..
https://www.facebook.com/groups/138226669540628/ If your trip will include Turkey, better to participate some bikers festival in different cities during summer months..Free camping, amusement, chat and çay with local and int. friendly bikers available..WARNING...: Gas is most expensive here.. Wish you all the best. |

Ill be doing this exact route from the UK, but ill be visiting Krakow in Poland, and the Transfargen in Romania.
Ill be completing it in 15-18 days though, also camping. Let me know if you fancy going slightly quicker ;) Something like this? (that is only a rough route, not exact roads) Liverpool, Merseyside, UK to Liverpool, Merseyside, UK - Google Maps |
Did 3 weeks in Romania last year - brilliant place! There is a very nice camp site near Sibiu at the end of the transfagarasan ( sure I wrote that wrong ) There is another spectacular pass next to that one called transalpina. If you ride transfagarasan up from the south towards Sibiu just before the tunnels there is a mountain rescue place. The rooms are basic with bunk beds and a small bathroom for 8 € per night. You can use the common room to eat your lovely cheese that you have to buy on the road side with the fresh vegies you get there too and the schnaps ( zuika)they might sell you in a water bottle.
Also if you travel north from Sibiu to Sigishoara ( Dracula country) a beautiful medival place there is another campsite which is a bit difficult to find. As you follow the camping sighns up the hill you keep thinking this is never right but you end up on the hilltop overlooking Sigishoara. The campsite belongs to a hotel and is hidden behind. Very basic but lovely and you get watered and fed well on the veranda with nice views. The way along the northern Karpathian mountains along the Ukranian border is very rough but well worth seeing. Time has stood still here. Old ladys sat on benches in front of the house spinning wool on a loom, cattle being driven home, everywhere hoses and carts and some of the houses ( mostly traditional) covered with colorful tiles on the outside just like the traditional wall carpets. B&B is quite reasonable in most places too. We will be travelling through Romania again end of June this year. Leave home in Germany with an English couple for Prague on the 24th. I was going to invite you along for a few miles but then saw that you travel in July so sorry by that time we hope to be in Kasachstan. Got some Romania pics on my facebook site ( Kerstin Holford ) if you'd like to have a look. Kerstin |
Cheers Kerstin great info thanks. I'll check out the campsites. I'm also a bit of a Dracula fan so will keep my eyes open. Enjoy Kazakhstan. Maybe catch you another time.
Cheers Steve |
We are leaving around the same time and travelling for around six weeks.
Going a similar route, but touring Turkey and maybe Georgia as well. We are in a 4x4 and happy to have a bier if our paths cross. Matt Blue LandCruiser |

PM Me if you feel like discussing the trip in detail, I'm very interested. |
Are you still doing this trip? I am in Romania at the moment, and we can meet up/travel together at least for a while. I am planning to do a hungary romania bulgaria route, but haven't really planned it out yet...
