Trans Africa - dept approx May 05
Hi,
---- REVIEWED DEPARTURE IN OCTOBER 2005 ---- I'm planning to head off dept from UK in May 05 and drive via France, Spain to Egypt and down East coast of Africa to South Africa. I'm quite an independant type of person but would really like to find other people doing a similar trip so as to meet up every now and again where possible. It could be particularly beneficial at certain border crossings or in more challenging terrain. Like to meet any body on the same mission basically! Best regards Sandi [This message has been edited by SandiGS650 (edited 30 December 2004).] |

I am very interested in doing this trip. I am from SA, and have been thinking of doing this sort of trip for sometime now....altho hadn't planned on leaving so soon. I have been looking around for info and route's etc. Hows your planning going? Am very! interested....would love to hear from you to discuss further
|
Will be great to discuss further. The more planning I do the more I realise that it takes at least a year and I may be looking at another 6 months to get sorted ie Oct 05. Just email me or if you are in London area we could meet up at ACE Cafe Hangar Lane sometime or if north we could meet at the next HUBB meeting in July. Anyway, with the fab weather any excuse to get on the bike!!! Planning is absolutely crucial to getting to do the trip at all. There are so many options too that figuring out what and how is nearly impossible.

hi sandi, im not planning a trip just writing to say that i think you will find doing it alone alot more rewarding having seen people travelling in pairs and travelled in a pair myself, you tend to fall into a lull of a familiar face and get stuck in a pair/group.when i did this i returned wishing i had done it alone.take it or leave it! afterall im only 20 what do i know

Hi Sandi,
I am also planning to depart UK - Nottingham - in April next year going to Ireland - UK - Norway for midnight sun in June 05 - catch tour de france in July and Paris Dakar in January 2006. Will be flexible during this time. After Dakar down to South Africa then RTW at a leisurely pace. I understand the benefits of riding alone but it is also nice to meet up with people occasionally. |
Hi,
Drop me a line when approaching Egypt if you need any help. I also have an equiped Garage if you need to work on your bike. ------------------ A.B. OasisPhoto.com – Images from the Magical Sahara. ShortWheelbase.com – Jeep preparations. Coordinates Converter – Lat/Long <-> UTM Conversion Tool. |

Hi,
Its now ages since I posted the first message! As things have transpired, I'll DEFINATELY be leaving in Oct 05. Not sure if early or end of Oct but latest is end Oct. Yipee. Intended route is: UK to France, towards Italy. Cross Med Sea to Tunisia. East across Lybia to Egypt. Then head South via Sudan, Egypt, Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi. Zigzag a bit to see Mozambique, Botswana, Namibia and end in South Africa. I intend taking 6 months. I have a travel partner, but it would be good to hear of other people doing similar routes - to convoy in certain areas, border crossing and general company. All the best Sandi |

I am planning a RTW trip starting in April leaving from San Francisco across the U.S. then to Europe. My dates are very flexible but I would like to start the Africa leg sometime around October and your route seems be along the same lines I am heading. Most of the trip I am doing solo but I would like to be in a group through Africa. We should definately meet up for this portion. Josh |
Hi Josh,
Sounds great. Keep me posted and let me know when you get closer to Europe and how your travels are going. If you travel via the UK then please get in touch - otherwise will meet en route. Good luck! Sandi |
Hi Sandi,
I've sent you private as well and I will be with you. Can we try to include Ethiopia as I am working with the African Childrens Eductional Trust and have been invited to call in. Cheers Dennis |

Busy looking into Libya and the huge visa issue. Good to see you managed to get the visa. I think the very busy but helpful man at the London Libyan office gave me the same contact as you mention on your site. Slightly more confident (but only slightly). Any places you would suggest going to in Libya? Or avoiding for that matter? Because of cost we are thinking of getting through as quickly as possible but don't want to miss something good because of this. Best Sandi |
Hi Sandi,
Myself and 2 mates are heading off from London early next week to do pretty much the same trip as you from London through East Africa to Malawi and then see how things go to Namibia and then on to Cape Town. We will probably be back in London before you leave in Oct 05, but maybe you would like to join us at our Launch party this saturday? We are meeting with loads of mates and other bikers who are all interested in adventure biking and you might meet some people who can help you. We are meeting at The Hole in the Wall pub in Chiswick, W4 4LD, for 12:00 and check out our website at www.2k5africa.co.za Mark |
Hello!
Yikes. Will try to make it Saturday but might be tricky. In anycase, I'll keep an eye on your website. And here is my blog so you can keep track of me http://long-way-home.blogspot.com I think we have decided to go round via Syria missing Libya due to cost and hassle really. If I can't meet this Saturday then please let me know when you are back and would like to catch up then. Good luck and have FUN. Sandi Quote:

Hi Sandi.
I have a post a little bit below yours. Me and my wife are going the same route around the same time. Would be great to meet up. It's as you say very convenient at bordercrossings to be more than one. Maybe we will ship the bike from Mombasa and Calcutta and continue home from there. |
