The Sahara 2011
 

I'm looking at going to play in the sand in 2011.

If anyone is interested to come with me reply on this thread, Ideally I'd like to go with another novice adventurer or 2 who can plan the trip with me from scratch.

A Bristol (UK) local would also be benifical so we can communicate face to face as often as possible.

Do you have any further plans like countries to visit or even a rough timeline for your trip?

I probably will have to do it in a 3 week period to fit in with work.

but no real dates in mind just know that september and october are out of the question.

Whether riding in the sahara in july/august is do able or is the heat too much??

I'm thinking keep it simple so maybe a lap of Marocco would be good.

Left the UK last August on my Cagiva and am now in Italy saving for petrol money. Would love to hit the dunes (on a different bike though). Or take mine and hire a 250 for a couple of days of serious sand blasting.

I don't mind the heat, are you fussed about going in the summer?

I'm leaving for 1 month in nov 2010 for Morocco and the Western Sahara. I have place left in my van for 2 bikes/persons . I'm leaving my van in Almeria and take the ferry to Melillia. If you are interested please let me know.

Three weeks sound way too short. The summer in the Sahara for a novice??? Brave or foolhardy?

I reckon Morocco needs two weeks and that excludes getting there. I am planning Morocco next spring as I don't like the heat.

All the advice I have heard is to take your time to see where you are travelling through. More time, fewer miles.

Get Chris Scott's book on Sahara travel. It's got all the advice you need on preparation and travel.

Peter, what are your plans.....I take it you will be on a motorcycle once parking up your van ?

I am potentially interested, may be between jobs around then.

Got myself a XT600E, would love to do more of the dirt than tarmac.

I´m interested in joining you. Take no notice of the nay sayers, anything is possible in any amount of time you have available. I road to Dakar from London last year comfortably in three weeks and am up for doing something similar again. And sand camp would be great fun!
I´m riding my bike around the UK when I get back in July (currently in Colombia) so could drop by for a beer and chat if that interests you? I´m based in London, so not too far for future planning.

Would be good to meet up if you are up for it.

My rough plans are to either get a ferry to north spain and cross spain or use the transporter/ sleeper trains to cross france to get the the ferry terminal with in the south of spain with as much time to play with as possible in africa.

But really all depends on costs.
