Texas to TDF

Howdy,
I'm leaving Houston the second week of July all the way south to tierra del fuego. I'll be riding a F650 GS and planning on taking a very slow pace as I have 6 months to burn.

My goal is to not ride more than 200 miles a day and try to have some fun offroad experiences as well as stop at all the UNESCO sites on the way.

briefly:
29 yo male
been riding for 9 years, mostly street
toured mexico a few times, so I am very comfortable there
speak enough spanish to get by, main goal of trip is to become proficient
easy going
well prepared (i like trip planning as much as the actual trip itself, not that plans actually indicate what will happen.. I just like to have a list of things i *COULD* do)
big map and gps nerd. you've been warned.

Anyway... If anyone is interested, drop me a line. You can see my trip blog at gsomething.com .. There isn't that much there .. YET :cool4:

As of now, I'm traveling solo, but it'd be nice to ride/meetup with people along the way.

If you live in the Houton area and have done a similiar trip, let me know as I'd like to buy you a beer and chat.

Hi Dave

Debra and I are starting in Montreal this May.

After Canada and Alaska we have a loose plan to ride the down the Continental Devide to NM July time.

Not sure where to enter Mexico, we will have been on the road for about 4 months by then so maybe head over to Baja for some R & R and brush up on the Spanish.

See you on the road.

Mings

Dave, Do you ever go to Mings on thursday nights? Euro bikes meet there year round. Can find some likeminded riders there and get good Chinese food to boot! I may be making a run about then to San Luis Potosi. Usually ride alone but may consider company. I never plan. I never have a schedule. I never know which way I will go until I wake up in the morning....... and then go. Totally hedonistic you might say. I will have 3 or 4 weeks off around then and don't mind the south Texas "heat" that time of year. Seems to cool down a bit in Mexico. See Ya, Smitty

daveg 2 Apr 2008 22:06

I tried going to Ming's right before the timechange and apparently got there too late (9:00!!!). Didn't matter so much, as you said, because of the good food. They have great Singapore noodles.

What time do people usually show up? I mean to show up every Th, but always seem to forget until later :(.

I'm going to try _really_ hard this Thursday. I kinda figured it would be all kids on sportbikes based on the guy who told me about it originally.

Ever been to Puente de Dios, Tamasopo, SLP.. midway between Rio Verde and Cuidad Valles? I was reading a thread over on advrider about it and have to see it the next time I'm in the area Puente de Dios, Tamasopo, Mexico - ADVrider

In SLP, I went to real de 14 and stayed a night in rio verde. They are some really pretty areas.

Mings.... again

I must confess it's been 7 or 8 months since I've been there. I'm up in Austin now. The owner of Mings opened a "Mings" up here too and does the motorcycle thing on wednesday night in Austin. People ususally start showing up around 7 PM. If the weather is nice, you can get a 40 bike turnout. From new to classics. Very low key. Some long distance riders. Like I say, I haven't been in awhile, but it used to be a good place to go.

Hello
I 'm planing almost the same , except I will start from Canada around mid-august,

we should be in the southest part of south america at the same time !!

If I'm not there, you can put-up at Pension Santa Elena bike friendly and repair shops around that we know of...
Ask for Ran or Jim, that's me...I should be there in late May - driving down from Vermont in a week or so.
You know the Dakar rally is in Argentina/Chile Jan 3 2008 ???

South

Dave,
I'm leaving California on July 1st, but heading for the HU meeting in Colorado first. Then, around the 10th to the 15th of July, heading down to Mexico. Not sure if I am going to go the coast route or stick to the interior. Both have advantages. My first big stop will be in Qaxaca to study spanish for about a month or so. Then down to Guatemala to do the same, and again in Costa Rica. Long term I want to go RTW. Spent a lot of time in Mexico, but never by bike. Anyway, we might run into each other.

Rich,
That sounds like a great plan. I was also considering going to the HU meeting, but I'm the best man in a wedding July 4th.

How did you come to choose Qaxaca to study spanish? I'm trying to figure out where I'm going to take a month and study. My short list is Antigua or Guanajuato.

We'll certainly be in the same areas at the same time. Glad I won't be the only one dieing in the heat.:Beach:

Hi Dave

Dave I leave for Mexico on the 2nd of may & have a similar journey planned to your's. However in July I will be taking a break to fly back to the US for a family holiday for a couple of weeks then rejoin somwhere in Nicaragua I think end of July.

I am from the UK in my late 30's and do not plan to ride more than 200 miles like youself & take in as many sites that I can. I am riding a new KLR650 & have been travelling the south west US for the past 2 months. I might be a few weeks ahead of you but sure we could catch up somewhere along the route as I will be stopping to learn some spanish in a homestay.

I am currently in Phoenix with my brother so drop me a PM & we could chat.

Cheers Mojo

Looks like I'll be going solo, Dave, my riding partner in Cali decided he can't do the trip.:censored:

Scott:
When are you leaving again? Billy (octane) is looking for a riding partner to guatemala around labor day. I was going to go as a dry run for my big trip, but decided it would be too uncool to take two weeks off then a month later quit.

All:
I just told my job that I'll be resigning June 13!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Motorcycle trip through Mexico

Dave, I am an American Geologist working/living in Durango Mexico. When you ride down here there is a good chance that you will pass through Durango, especially if you plan to ride the highway to Mazatlan.

I ride a KLR-650 and know the area well. Give me a shout if you need anything. If you pass through here on a weekend I could ride with you for a day.

The highway to Mazatlan is the bomb! and there are several other Sierra Madre crossings that would be fun.
